The morning after: Leafs vs. Flyers 9.23.10

“The morning after” is a review of the previous night’s Flyers’ game which, in theory, provides a more objective perspective on the game.

  • James van Riemsdyk is transforming into an exciting player to watch but that needs to start translating into points too.
  • Bill Guerin was much more visible tonight than he was against the Devils, scoring a goal in regulation and one in the shootout, and playing a strong game on both ends of the ice.
  • Ben Holmstrom continues to win me over. I hope he develops into the next Manny Malhotra.
  • Oskars Bartulis played a solid game and continues to proves he’s more worthy of an NHL roster spot than Matt Walker. At the same time, he’d be better off getting more ice time in the AHL where he can continue to develop.
  • Scott Hartnell stayed vertical through an entire breakaway and, to the best of my knowledge, the entire game, aside from when he got buried by Luke Schenn.
  • Mike Testwuide had a decent debut and made one stellar deke but was otherwise lackluster.
  • If Zac Rinaldo never played another game for the Flyers, there would be no reason to lose any sleep over it.
  • Andrej Meszaros improved after the first period of the New Jersey Devils game but he’s still pretty average at best – which might be pretty generous – and not worth his cap hit, which inevitably forced the Flyers to trade Simon Gagne.
  • It’s good to see Marc-Andre Bourdon and Joonas Lehtivuori playing. They both need time to develop but they seem to have NHL potential. Too bad the Flyers have filled every spot on defense for the next three or four decades.
  • Brian Boucher and Sergei Bobrovsky were both strong, which can only mean one thing: more hype about Bobrovsky making the team. Both goalies, however, were outdueled by Leafs’ goaltending prospect, James Reimer.
  • Another shootout? Really? Ugh.

While the Flyers game was on NHL Network, Channel X had “Meet the Flyers” on the schedule…Bill Guerin was featured on that show…I smell some foreshadowing, because they wouldn’t have him on the show unless he’s gonna make the roster, eh?

That would be my guess too.

What’s more sad – the fact that a preseason game (where the final result is meaningless) went to a shootout that lasted 11 agonizing rounds…or that I watched the whole thing?

Don’t worry, I was right there with you. After about five or six shots, I thought the shootout became comical. It’s ridiculous that it took that long.

Really enjoying these entries. Keep it up.

Is Meszaros really looking that poor? Why do I have a terrible feeling that he’s going to become the new Randy Jones… If there’s one thing I can’t stand its a player making far more money then he’s worth. Add that to the fact that a lot of fans are going to know that he was a big reason Gagne was let go and he certainly won’t enjoy his stay here. haha

      Thanks!

I think it’s inevitable that a guy like Meszaros will be put under more of a microscope because of his contract and the Gagne situation. I think his best period so far was the third period of the Devils game. He showed off some of his offensive potential. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him put up a decent amount of points this season but his defensive play has been mediocre so far.
