I was honored to be asked this question. I have loved the Flyers a very long time.
I grew up in a neighborhood of mostly guys. They played street hockey everyday. They took on the names of the players that they loved as they played. Names like Kerr, Zezel, Poulin, & Hextall. This is how I came to love hockey and the Flyers:
1. Mark Howe was what put me over the top in my love for the Flyers
I had the esteemed pleasure to meet and talk with Mark Howe. Mark Howe is one of the best people I have had the pleasure to meet. He made me his fan for life. At the time he wore Orange and Black I was hooked. I watched and learned all I could about Flyers hockey because of meeting him.
2. Flyers brand of blue collar hockey
Yes, I know Flyers hockey is about playing for the crest on the front, not the name on the back. I feel fortunate to have learned to love the Flyers on the late 80’s teams. They were fancy at times but mostly they were to me blue collar workers who went out every night and gave their all for one another.
3. Flyers games at the Spectrum
Yes, I am old enough to have gone to the Spectrum for games. We sat in section P Row 13. The end the Flyers defended twice and where a very young Lauren Hart came out to sing. That place was loud when it was full. It was an amazing place to watch hockey.
4. The Flyers Wives fight for lives carnival was the most amazing thing I had ever seen
The Spectrum was completely transformed and Flyers players were everywhere. Fans getting that chance that I had gotten to interact with their Flyers heroes. It was a great cause remembering one of the Flyers own in Barry Ashbee. I am very glad this still goes on and that fans still have that chance to do good and meet their heroes.
5. The fans are the reason I keep coming back
In all my years of watching the Flyers it is the faithful that keep me a fan. I have met so many great people who share the same love of Flyers hockey. Most Flyers fans are hockey educated. They know when they have something great on the ice. These fans will let you know it. They let you know it the other way too. You definitely hear it then especially if you are on the ice. The players on the ice change most every year. It is the people I get to know and see in passing that makes me most want to be at the Flyers games.
