CSN Philly‘s own Sarah Baicker does a terrific job of covering the Flyers and giving her legion of Twitter followers the inside scoop on the team. She is a devout hockey fan and player. Here are the five reasons she loves the Flyers.
1. The jersey
I’ve heard countless stories about the origin of the Flyers’ logo and the club’s orange-and-black uniforms. None of them are confirmed, but what is undeniable is that when you’re in Philly and you see orange, you know it’s for the Flyers. Whether the iconic black logo is actually supposed to be a flying P or a flying puck doesn’t matter. What does is the eye-catching brightness of the orange and how it contrasts against the white of the ice as players fly from end to end. How could you not love it?
2. The community
Without Flyers fans, my job would be irrelevant. But my love for the Flyers community goes way beyond that. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a number of my readers, and they’ve all been phenomenal – genuine, awesome, hockey-loving people. Whether they’re chasing me down in the halls of the Wells Fargo Center to buy me a beer and give me a hug (yeah, that’s happened), checking up on me on Twitter or sending an e-mail totally tearing apart my latest story, they energize me. I can’t get enough. These people are my people.
3. The history
Not just the history itself, but how it’s incorporated into the present-day club’s routine. Lauren Hart and Kate Smith’s duet during the playoffs. The constant references to the Broad Street Bullies. The way that the generation of hockey fans that preceded mine talks about their experiences watching as children. Even the former Flyers that are associated with the team or with Comcast SportsNet. When you get to know these people, or experience the game in a historical context, you can’t help but be hyper-aware of the gravity of the history that surrounds the game played in this building.
4. The game
Have I mentioned I love hockey? I love hockey. I love playing it, coaching it, and certainly I love watching it. Hockey is a great game. I’ve had the pleasure of covering Eagles practices and Phillies games as part of my job, but nothing compares to this game. The speed, the hits – I can’t get enough. And I’m lucky that, as a lifelong Philadelphian and Flyers writer, the hockey that I get to watch and write about is Flyers hockey.
5. The players
Hockey players are some of the most down-to-earth, professional athletes around. NHL hockey is a wonderful community, and even though there can be strife between reporters and players (I mean, we all spend so much time around one another, conflict is guaranteed), at the end of the day, the Flyers have class. Every single one of them. I’ve never felt uncomfortable in their locker room, and not one of those guys has done anything to make me feel unwanted or undeserving of the access they allow. You’re lucky, Flyers fans – your team, your players, are all great guys!
