Don’t Panic: Pronger out with broken foot

It wouldn’t be the middle of the season without some disconcerting news in Flyerland…

Defenseman Chris Pronger is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks because of a broken foot.

General manager Paul Holmgren said Pronger will undergo surgery to repair a broken first metatarsal in his right foot. The six-time All-Star was hurt late in the second period during Wednesday’s 5-3 victory in Montreal.

Pronger leads all Philadelphia defensemen with four goals and has added 11 assists for 15 points in 31 games. He is also a plus-six for the NHL’s top team. The Flyers have a league-best 47 points and have won four straight games heading into Saturday’s tilt with the New York Rangers.

Holmgren also revealed that spare defenseman Matt Walker underwent hip surgery on Thursday and is expected to be sidelined for 6-to-8 weeks. Walker, acquired from Tampa Bay for Simon Gagne, has yet to play a game here due to problems with both hips.
