You like the Flyers, right? Of course you do. That’s why you’re here. I bet you’re a good person too. As a fan of the Flyers, giving has become second nature to you. It’s inevitable, given all of the countless charities run through the organization.
This year’s Flyers Wives Fight For Lives Carnival may already be a distant memory but the giving season is far from over. Now is the time to dig deep to help the Flyers and Dancin’ Shawny raise money for Flyers Charities through Beard-A-Thon.
So, what is Beard-A-Thon? Let’s get that info straight from the source.
Beard-A-Thon is one of the many fundraisers held for the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation enabling the company which owns the Flyers and the Philadelphia 76ers opportunities to raise funds for many worthwhile causes in the Greater Philadelphia Region. Some of the charities the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation has supported include Living Beyond Breast Cancer, March of Dimes, Philadelphia Police Athletic League, Ronald McDonald House, Minding Your Mind Foundation, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and many others! To date, nearly $23 million dollars has been raised and contributed back into the community since 1977.
Shawny Hill did the Beard-A-Thon last year and raised over $600 but he has his eyes set on a much higher goal this time around. He has pledged to raise $2,011 (the year the Flyers win the Stanley Cup?) for charity. It will be a tough goal to reach but, with the support of all the loyal fans out there, it should be doable.
“I’m blessed that I can grow a decent beard and that people have supported me with the Dancing Guy thing and the new In-Arena Host role,” said Hill. “I’ve always been charitable, but with the little extra notoriety I feel I should try even harder to raise money for a good cause. It’s personal because I care for the charity, but I don’t do it to take attention or anything like that.”
Hill also gives you a little return on your investment in the form of the Beard Blog, where users can follow updates on his beard growth and, assumably, the amount of donations he’s received.
At the time of this publication, Dancin’ Shawny was already on target to smash last season’s total. He has raised $406 and the Flyers have yet to play a single playoff game.
