Ben Holmstrom spent his junior years playing for the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League from 2003-2006. He tallied 14 goals and 18 assists in 126 games over three years with the Stampede. In his final season with te Stampede, he captained them to their first ever championship and to a franchise best record of 43-13-4.
Holmstrom headed to the NCAA to play for the University of Massachusetts Lowell River Hawks beginning with the 06-07 season. He finished his freshman year with 13 points (4 g, 9 a) in 30 games.
The River Hawks named Holmstrom their captain beginning with his sophomore season. Holmstream played in all 37 games for the Hawks where he finished with 7 goals and 20 assists. His 20 assists tied for the team lead in assists. He also led the team in faceoffs taken and faceoffs won.
Holmstrom once again played in every game for the River Hawks in junior season. He totaled 6 goals and 15 assists in 37 games played. For the second season in a row he led the team in faceoffs taken and faceoffs won.
Holmstrom finished fourth in team scoring during his senior season with 9 goals and 14 assists in 39 games. The Hockey East named him Best Defensive Foward for his performance in his senior year. When his year with the River Hwks was over, he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers and made his professional debut with the Adirondack Phantoms. He scored 3 goals in 13 games with the Phantoms.
Holmstrom began his first full year as a member of the Flyers organization during the 2010-2011 season. He recorded 16 goals and 22 assists in 79 games with the Phantoms. He was named the Phantoms MVP for being their top shutdown player who could play in all situations.
