Does it come as any surprise that the team with the Flying ‘P’ on its chest is synonymous with as much passion as the Flyers? But for me, it’s not just the organization – it’s pretty much everything and everyone that is associated with the team as well.
Collectively, I don’t know if I can think of a more die-hard group of people from top to bottom.
Every Flyers fan I’ve ever met that can tell the difference between a lefty and righty hockey stick is just as disgustingly enthusiastic about this team as I am, and I love it. It makes me strive to turn every girlfriend I’ve ever had into a Flyers fan just so she can understand why I’m attached to my Flyers-crazy twitter feed, mouthing the names of obscure Flyers from yesteryear and laughing aloud when particularly euphoric names surface.
Even in a season where the team was the worst in the league, it still played to 98.9% capacity – third highest among American franchises at the time. We may have booed the whole time, but that stemmed from the expectations we have for the team to perform. Even in the worst of times it’s still a good day to be a Flyers fan, just because of the passion the organization has come to represent.
2. The drive to win
It kind of goes hand in hand with passion, but you always know the team is trying to win it all, and not just financially. We may end up banging our head on the wall most of the time for it, but at the end of the day we all know that a significantly bad product will not be tolerated on the ice very long in Philadelphia – at all.
3. The uniforms
I’m the type of guy who likes to have new things. One of the few exceptions to that in my book is the Flyers jersey. The classic bright Orange and White jerseys have gotten to the point where they feel like home to me. Every time I see my jersey in the closet, glowing brightly on the shelf with it’s chest crest staring me in the face, I can’t help but smile.
Now I just need a new one since it’s a Richards jersey…
4. The history
As someone who was made in the 80′s and thus not old enough to understand hockey until the 90’s, I missed out on some of the most notorious tales in Flyers history; but that hasn’t stopped me from learning about it at every turn and taking immense pride in the team’s that came before my time. Hearing the stories of the match versus the Soviets and the Cup runs in the 70’s makes me proud of the roots of my organization, and I love the way the team’s history continues to be a part of it’s blueprint going forward.
5. The Orange Crush
Nothing pleases me more in sporting events than a coordinated crowd. Penn State and its whiteout is another great example of this, but if it’s Orange Crush time, that likely means its playoff time at the Wells Fargo Center – and few teams in the world are capable of creating such a raucous playoff atmosphere.
These two videos were prominently featured on my myspace page at the time of the lockout (yeah I went there), and still to this day are still my favorite Flyers related video clips – and it’s all due to Orange Crush-induced chills.
