Are you tired of hearing about Flyers West yet? Too bad! It’s frankly the only thing we can write about at this point, unless you’re clamoring for a piece on how good Claude Giroux is at drinking games (hint: this is the wrong site for that sort of news).
So here we are again, on the verge of watching former beloved members of the Orange and Black holding the Stanley Cup. It’s happened before and it will happen again.
The LA Kings are the new Carolina Hurricanes: a team featuring former prominent Flyers that you really don’t mind seeing win it all (with Jeff Carter thrown in as a golden bearded wild card). Simon Gagne is the new Rod Brind’Amour. Mike Richards is the new Mark Recchi. And Justin Williams is the new…Justin Williams?
There will be many people that won’t take a Kings win well, even if it is infinitely better than seeing hockey’s Katamari Damacy Martin Brodeur win another Stanley Cup. We haven’t had a proper parade for the Flyguys for almost 40 years now! This tends to make us Flyers fans a bit bitter. Frankly, I’ve come to accept this and will take what I can get. Yes, the crest on the front matters the most but I’ll take some of my favorite names on the back winning elsewhere. I need to get some sort of enjoyment from the game. If I can’t enjoy seeing Gagne lift that magnificent silver trophy then what can I enjoy?
Until the Flyers finally buck up and break whatever “curse” has afflicted them since 1975, I will take what I can get. I’ll take the video game cover contests, All-Star Game appearances, and living vicariously through other teams. Sad? Maybe. But it’s keeping me sane.
