Hockey Hilarity: The Evolution of a Good Chirp

Thanks to Film Junk

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players and media personnel. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more!

If you’ve ever played hockey or watched HBO’s documentary series 24/7: Road to the Winter Classic, you’d know that one of the best parts about the sport is the in-game banter, more commonly known as “chirping”. I mean, who doesn’t remember Mike Rupp’s infamous chirp at Jody Shelley “You’re irrelevant out here”? It’s hilarious and fun and we all wish we could hear all of the ridiculous things these grown men say to one another to get under his their opponents’ skin.

Luckily for us, we live in an age where we don’t have to wait for games anymore for players to go at each other. They have a new venue to showcase their gifts of gab and we can even respond! That wonderful, cutting-edge arena is called Twitter.

Recently, every Philadelphia Flyers fan’s favorite wrecking ball, Zac Rinaldo (@RinaldoZac) sent out a tweet that seemed pretty general and innocuous:

Then, a very recently departed Flyer and now Toronto Maple Leaf by the name of James van Riemsdyk (@JVReemer21) chirped:

Pretty funny JvR. I’d laugh if I were Rinaldo. The thing is, on Twitter, regular people can reply and that’s what’s so great about it! Because then, you get beauties like these from people like Lee Anthony Bowers (@SlapMyLBow):

And you see ladies and gentlemen, that’s how it’s done. Check back for more hockey hilarity next week!
