European Updates: Voracek injures knee, Simmonds fights

Martin Ruzicka isn’t well-known in the NHL but he’s a hell of a forward in the Czech Extraliga as well as in the KHL where he spent his previous season. This season Martin returned to Trinec and he has scored in the first 9 games of the Extraliga.

In the 10th game he had no goals and Ocelari Trinec (Trinec Steelers) lost to Zlin 2:3. Trinec is now 3rd behind last year’s finalist Kometa Brno (Comet Brno) and PSG Zlin (PSG is a plastic window manufacturer and head sponsor of Zlin).

Jagr’s Kladno is in fifth, one point behind HC Skoda Plzen. HC Rytiri Kladno lost their last game also to Zlin.
HC Lev Praha played another game against a very strong opponent. They met SKA St. Petersburg last Sunday led by Milos Riha, one of the most

Riha said that SKA had played very well and that they played organized but later in the game they started to play individually, which had been punished by Lev.

The arena of the Czech team, O2 Arena, recorded the best attendance for a single Lev game – 12 787 spectators. “The atmosphere was awesome. Players felt that and they used all one’s strength to win the game. It was very good to play in the Czech Republic because of the motivation, man wants to show his team,” Riha added.

Ilya Kovalchuk told the media that the game was very difficult and his team didn’t play their

best. He also complained on the ice and the atmosphere (which was very good for nearly every person in the O2 Arena but Kovalchuk).

Lev lost two players and both are connected with the Flyers. Jakub Voracek hurt his knee and he’ll be sidelined for up to 4 weeks.

During Sunday’s practice Alexandre Picard, former Flyers prospect, hurt his shoulder when he hit the boards. It’s not clear when he may come back.

Avangard Omsk, one of the former Giroux’s suitors signed Sergei Kostitsyn from the Nashville Predators. He followed his brother Andrei who agreed on terms with Traktor Chelyabinsk. Sergei Kostitsyn has 2 years left on his Nashville contract with 3 milion USD per season. In his last season, he recorded 43 points (17 goals, 26 assists). In the playoffs he added 1 goal and 1 assists during 10 games.

HC Slovan Bratislava hosted Dynamo Moscow with Alexander Ovechkin in the lineup. Slovan added newly acquired Andrei Sekera from Buffalo. Dynamo led by 3 goals midway the second period but Slovan came up big in the last twenty minutes and they made it a one goal game but they were unable to tie the game. Wayne Simmonds had his first Rinke suffered  a black eye and added on his Facebook page that: “Once I could tell my kids about my fight against NHL heavyweight.”

I’m not sure about the classification of heavyweight for “Simmer,” but it’s good to see Wayne staying in shape.fight against Ralf Rinke from Bremerhaven.

The Wayne Train sent the 19-year-old German to the ice by his left hand. He landed a couple of good ones by his right hand, too. You can see that in the video here: Wayne Simmonds vs Ralf Rinke. Wayne’s fight starts 1:56.

Despite this fight, Crimmitschau lost to Bremerhaven 4:7. Giroux and Danny Briere will play their first game for Eisbären on Friday against Cologne. Giroux was asked about his choice and he replied that “There’s good competition and there’s a tougher hockey than in the Switzerland or in the Czech Republic.” Both signed till the end of the season but they could go back to the NHL once the league starts.
