Future Flyers Report: 11/19

Derek Mathers is one of the tougher prospects in the Philadelphia Flyers’ system. With 47 penalty minutes in 24 games, Mathers is currently 14th in the Ontario Hockey League in time spent in the sin bin.

He’s engaged in three fights so far this season and he’s won two of them in convincing fashion. In a Peterborough Petes’ 5-1 loss to the Oshawa Generals, Mathers took out his frustration on Scott Sabourin in the Flyers’ prospect’s first fight of the 2012-2013 regular season. After he fought the Owen Sound Attack’s Daniel Zweep in an even bout in Peterborough’s 5-4 shootout loss on October 13, Mathers dropped the gloves with Johnny McGuire of the Erie Otters on November 9. The Peterborough Pete also TKO’d Matt Bragagnolo of the Brampton Battalion during the preseason.

During the 2011-2012 campaign, Mathers took part in 29 scraps. Of those bouts, 24 came with the Petes and three came with the Adirondack Phantoms. Mathers won all three of his tilts in the AHL against Josh Brittain, Jared Nightingale, and Mike Moore. In 2010-2011, Mathers fought 30 times when he suited up for Peterborough.

An upside to Mathers, in addition to his toughness, is the fact he can chip in offensively. In 24 games this season, Mathers has three goals and five assists for the Petes. If the forward can continue to annihilate opponents physically and provide results in the offensive zone, Mathers could work his way up the Flyers’ ladder rather quickly.
