I wouldn’t say last night was a “debacle,” simply because there was nothing reported that indicated a deal was imminent and the stoppage of negotiations ruined it.

There are no guarantees that a deal would have been struck, but things are getting closer. The gulf is now a canal, and I think writers, fans and other media personages need to focus on that rather than jumping to weird emotional outbursts focusing on what each side refuses to give up when things seem close.

The worst that happens now, with Gary Bettman’s publicly-issued sabbatical, is that the rest of December is eliminated. Admit it, as a trained lawyer, he knows best how to handle the fallout from sensitive discussions that break up. That still means 3 more weeks of wiggle room and ability to negotiate and get a CBA done for a season to start in January.

I’m still comfortable with a 56-game inter-conference slate kicking off next month as early as possible, provided there’s not talk of jamming in 4 games per week until mid-April.
