We also did a Five Questions series on the NHL Draft featuring Adam Kimelman from NHL.com, Mark Edwards from HockeyProspect.com, Chris Shafer from Hockey’s Future, and Todd Cordell from The Hockey Guys and HockeyBuzz. See these expert’s responses to the questions below:

Defense and Goaltending: Are there any players in this upcoming draft that would be a surefire bet to succeed on defense or in net? If so, is it worth it for the Flyers to move up in  the draft to make such a pick?

Sleepers: What sleeper picks might there be in this draft?

Overrated: Which prospect(s) do you think is (are) rated higher than they should be?

Trading Down: Would the Flyers be wise to trade down from the 11th overall pick and acquire more late round picks given how deep this draft class is supposed to be?

European Scouting: Do you think it would be beneficial if the Flyers start looking overseas more?

Why are some Europeans slated to be first round talented when history shows us this may not be case? For example Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk were selected 210th and 171st overall respectively.

The Flyers currently hold six picks in the 2013 draft:

Round 1 – 11th overall – Flyers select Samuel Morin (D)
Round 2 – 41st overall – Flyers select Robert Hägg (D)
Round 3 – 72nd overall - Flyers select Tyrell Goulbourne (LW)
Round 5 – 132nd overall – Flyers select Terrance Amorosa (D)
Round 6 – 162nd overall – Flyers select Merrick Madsen (G)
Round 7 – 192nd overall – Flyers select David Drake (D)

Some of the bigger names linked to the Flyers in the first round include:

Darnell Nurse - D – 6’5” 192lbs
Rasmus Ristolainen - D – 6’3” 207lbs
Ryan Pulock - D – 6’1” 211lbs
Zach Fucale - G – 6’1” 176lbs
Nikita Zadorov - D – 6’5” 228lbs
Samuel Morin – D – 6’6” 203lbs
Anthony Mantha - RW – 6’4” 187lbs

If you have any questions for Tom or Jared before, during, or after the draft be sure to ask them in the comments section below and they will do their best to answer them for you!

Perhaps we will hear “I have a trade to announce…” a few times in 2013.

08:22:47 - Jared Abbott

I want to apologize for the faithful fans that wanted more information on the draft picks. Tom and I were unable to elaborate on the later picks with them coming in fast and furious.

The Flyers had a bad draft so far. Hagg was the only good pick, Morin would have been better if they got him later than #11. The third round selection was absurd given the prospects remaining on the board.

The Blackhawks continue to get deeper and richer. Ryan Hartman is a tremendous character player and falling to #30 was a treat for Chicago. John Hayden, the American kid, is a solid depth choice.

Buffalo made some better choices today. Ristolainen and Zadorov in the first round bolstered the D-unit, then followed by three Americans in the second round.

Edmonton, Dallas, Toronto and New York Islanders have had solid drafts so far. These later rounds are where the scouts earn their money and the future Stanley Cup champions find depth and contributors.

The rich get richer. Hartman is a perfect fit. Gritty, physical, agitator. Two-way player. Can’t believe he lasted this long.

With the 28th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Calgary Flames select Morgan Klimchuk (LW) from the Regina Pats.

05:50:58 - Jared Abbott

Interesting 1st round for Columbus. Two Euros in its 3 1st round picks. Dano is a question mark, despite playing in the KHL. Big-bodied kid, but doesn’t flash enough for a 1st round selection.

05:47:53 - Jared Abbott

With the 27th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Columbus Blue Jackets select Marko Dano, C, Bratislava (KHL) (5’111/2″ 212 lbs) Columbus acquired this pick from the Los Angeles Kings in the Jack Johnson deal.

05:38:26 - Jared Abbott

McCarron is set to go to Western Michigan, but I see the London Knights luring him to the OHL. Montreal loves American kids and McCarron has size, grit and a power-style to his game.

05:36:38 - Tom Zulewski

This is a great pick by the Canadiens. They love picking American kids. I saw McCarron play Penn State this year in State College and McCarron was dominant. I love his size and nastiness.

05:30:50 - Jared Abbott

Shinkaruk needs to bulk up and focus more on the defensive zone. I thought he would go 22nd to Calgary. He seems to be a bit full of himself with comparisons and self-evaluation.

05:29:41 - Tom Zulewski

With the 24th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Vancouver Canucks select Hunter Shinkaruk (LW/C) from the Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL).

In response to Jay’s question:

First, this is about the entire NHL Draft. We will discuss the Flyers, but not solely focus on them. Second, the Flyers need to be wise with the rest of their picks. Trying to build depth through free agency can be risky and expensive. Bringing back old players like Jagr, Gagne, Knuble is a bad decision. This team needs to get younger, faster, and more physical. This isn’t a time to admire the Flyers of the past. The team needs a strong direction and adding free agents isn’t the strategy they should use to build a core.

05:24:43 - Jared Abbott

With the 23rd overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Washington Capitals select Andre Burakovsky, LW, Malmo (SWE-2) (6’1″ 178-lbs.)

With the 21st overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs select Frederik Gauthier, C, Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL) (6’5” 210 lbs.)

Anthony Mantha is the purest scorer in this draft. One of 3 players to score 50 goals this season, and the only one to do so in the QMJHL.

05:06:55 - Tom Zulewski

That is a tremendous pick for the Red Wings.

05:06:38 - Tom Zulewski

With the 20th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Detroit Red Wings select Anthony Mantha  (RW) Val d’Or (QMJHL).

With the 16th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Buffalo Sabres select Nikita ZadorovD, from the London Knights (OHL)

With the 14th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Columbus Blue Jackets select Alex WennbergC,  Djurgarden Jr. (Sweden Jr.)

04:29:20 - Jared Abbott

With the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Winnipeg Jets select Joshua Morrissey, D, Prince Albert Raiders (WHL) (5’11” 182 lbs.)

04:23:01 - Jared Abbott

The Flyers make the first disappointing selection of the 2013 NHL Draft. Morin was a late-1st, early-2nd round pick and was overdrafted at #11. He is big, tough, and raw but is a project and may not have the high ceiling some people hope for.

04:22:22 - Tom Zulewski

With the twelfth pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Phoenix Coyotes select Max Domi , C/LW,  London Knights (OHL)

04:17:33 - Tom Zulewski

I do not like this pick at all for the Flyers. I didn’t even have him in my first round. He looks like a pylon.

04:16:35 - Jared Abbott

With the 11th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers select Samuel Morin, D, Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL) (6’7” 200 lbs.)

04:12:46 - Jared Abbott

The Flyers are on the clock.

04:12:20 - Tom Zulewski

I would like Pulock here. Not Zadorov or Morin.

04:10:44 - Tom Zulewski

With the tenth overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Dallas Stars select Valeri NichushkinRW, Chelyabinsk (KHL)

04:03:53 - Jared Abbott

03:56:03 - Tom Zulewski

The New York Islanders have acquired Cal Clutterbuck from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Nino Niederreiter.

03:54:07 - Tom Zulewski

This is an excellent pick for the Sabres. A bit of a surprise. The Flyers were high on him.

03:53:24 - Jared Abbott

Very good pick for Buffalo. Rasmus Ristolainen is an NHL-ready defenseman. All-around two-way blueliner with a physical, mean streak.

03:52:14 - Tom Zulewski

With the eight overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Buffalo Sabres select Rasmus Ristolainen, D, from TPS (Finland).

03:50:33 - Kevin Christmann

Administrative Note: It appears as if the auto-refresh is having some issues at the moment. We are working on it. In the meantime, feel free to refresh from time to time. Thanks.

03:48:54 - Jared Abbott

The Oilers get a tough, gritty player in Darnell Nurse. He helps bolster the deep prospect pool for Edmonton.

03:20:16 - Tom Zulewski

Very interesting pick by Florida. A bit of a surprise. Tons of upside. How far does Jones fall?

03:17:01 - Tom Zulewski

With the second overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Florida Panthers select Aleksander Barkov from Tappara of the Finnish Elite League.

03:16:43 - Jared Abbott

MacKinnon played center for the Memorial Cup champions (Halifax Mooseheads- QMJHL) 6’0″ 182-lbs.

03:12:11 - Tom Zulewski

I still don’t like this pick for Colorado. They need help on the backend. The Av’s have no elite talent on the blueline. They quite possibly passed on an once in a generation defenseman.

03:11:08 - Jared Abbott

With the first overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Colorado Avalanche select Nathan MacKinnon.

03:05:48 - Tom Zulewski

If Nate MacKinnon goes #1 overall to the Avalanche what does Florida do? Jones? Barkov? Drouin?

03:01:28 - Jared Abbott

Donovan McNabb making an appearance at the 2013 NHL Draft. Not sure what expert knowledge he can provide about ice hockey. I’m sure the New Jersey and New York fans are getting a laugh thinking about the Philly fans’ reactions right now.

Good pickup for the Penguins getting a high second round pick for Tyler Kennedy in a deep draft class.

02:48:48 - Jared Abbott

In response to Tom’s question below:

Morin would be a stretch at #11. I see him as a late-first, early-second
round pick. Ristolainen, Nurse and Pulock are a few D prospects worthy
of a higher selection than Morin.

02:47:51 - Tom Zulewski

We have our first trade. The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded Tyler Kennedy to the San Jose Sharks for the 50th overall selection in this year’s draft.

02:42:12 - Tom Zulewski

One player the Flyers should take a look at with the 41st overall selection is Belleville Bulls defenseman Jordan Subban. He’s not like his brother P.K. in terms of physical makeup but he’s a dynamic puckmoving defenseman who could be steal for some team. I compare him to a raw Kris Letang with a much higher upside.

02:31:37 - Jared Abbott

Interesting story to follow throughout the day: Flyers have reportedly made some inquiries about St. Louis Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak. The 28-year-old would be a solid no. 1 goalie for Philly. Price tag is a good roster player. We will continue to follow this as the draft unfolds.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have here in the comments!

do you think it makes sense for the Flyers to run after Vinny Lecav? Its like Ed Snider always has a hard on for big big strong Centers. I kind of like the young movement going on. It would be great if they could trade Coburn to edmonton for the 7th pick and draft defense 7 and 11. Nurse and Rasmus.

    • Tom Zulewski

Personally, I hope the Flyers do not touch Vinny. Like you said, the Flyers need to continue with the youth movement. I don’t know what kind of contract Vinny would want, but I believe he may seek somewhere in the range of $4 million to $4.5 per.

      • Jay

yeah especially with some of the contracts they have to do like G, Schenn, Couturier, Read

  • Jay

would love to see them make a push for Stalberg and Jagr. Pairing Stalberg and Couturier. Basically having Vourcek – Giroux – Simmonds , Hartnell – Schenn – Jagr, Stalberg – Couturier – Talbot,

Defensively i think we should roll with some of the young guys the Flyers had up at the end of the season.
    Kimmo – Rasmus
    Streit – Schenn
    Grossman – Lauridsen or Gus

    Goalie – Mason and Halak

Not sure how that works for the salary cap.

  • Jay

Honestly all i can hope for is Homer doesnt make the same mistakes in writing giant blank checks to anyone he can or emptying the entire farm system for Shea Webber.

  • Jay

if the Flyers dont win this year do you think thats it for Lavy and Homer? Any chance of bringing back Hextall to be the GM?

  • Tom

While watching NHL Network’s Mock Draft yesterday, they had the Flyers selecting defenseman Samuel Morin at # 11. I realize he’s a huge kid, but isn’t this a real stretch for their first pick?

    • http://flyersfaithful.com Jared Abbott

Morin would be a stretch at #11. I see him as a late-first, early-second round pick. Ristolainen, Nurse and Pulock are a few D prospects worthy of a higher selection than Morin. – Jared

  • Jay

Yeah i think if all the big name defenders are gone the Flyers should jump after the best available winger. Max Domi would be the perfect magician to be drafted by the flyers.

read rumors that he was ask for $6mill and the BluJack wanted to trade him

  • Jay

D.McNabb still sour about being booed. Come on man! I dont think he realizes that most Eagles fan think of him as one of the greatest Eagles of all time.

  • Jay

Does anyone else miss watching the NHL on ESPN or Fox? #GlowPuck

  • Jay

    Stern > Bettman

  • Jay

    This is twitter overkill

  • Jay

    WOW Mackinnon’s sister WOWZA

  • Jay

i didnt know Ed Helms moonlighted for TSN

  • Jay

Do you think the flyers need to change the style they play defense?

    • http://flyersfaithful.com/ Marcello

I think they need a better team commitment to defense.

  • Jay

With drafting of Jones do you think the Preds might try to move a defenseman for some scoring? Read rumors that the Weber deal is killing them financially!

    • http://flyersfaithful.com/ Marcello

Even if they did, I don’t think any of their high priced forwards would be a fit for the Flyers.

  • Jay

Edmonton seriously should be better then they are with all the players they have drafted.

    • http://flyersfaithful.com/ Marcello

The depth of that team is amazing. I think it behooves them to trade for a NHL defender in his prime like Coburn. They still need someone who can help them now.

  • Jay

    WOW

    • http://flyersfaithful.com/ Marcello

      Complete bull.

  • Jay

i miss you Pronger. I think Mark Paul Gosselaar could play him in a movie.

  • RZ

So I guess the Flyers are shooting for the number 1 pick overall next year.

  • Tom

Still living in the Bullies days. I don’t get it.

    • Jay

maybe they think that Gus and Laurdsien and Morin can develop there offensive game. Subban needs to be our next pick.

  • Jay

i think the Flyers will be still paying off Pronger’s contract even once he becomes the GM of the team

  • Tom

Nothing to really do with hockey, but can somebody tell me why the Flyers seem to be the only team in the NHL that does not have their selected players’ name on the back of the sweater.

    • http://www.flyersfaithful.com/ Kevin Christmann

      I never noticed that before…

  • Jay

Can we focus onthe main theme of this page THE FLYERS. Are these experts really just 13 year old kids watching NBC Sportsnetwork and following writers on twitter?

    • Jay

What should the flyers do in free agency now? Who should they look for? Seems like the ogre they drafted needs some seasoning for at least a year or two. Seems like we might need another defenseman. do we need another winger? should we go old and bring back Jagr and Gagne? Goalie options to pair with the NEW FRANCHISE Steve Mason. Should the Flyers sign Giroux to a huge long term deal. Seems like its a curse to become a captain of the flyers and sign a long deal.

    • http://www.flyersfaithful.com/ Kevin Christmann

Sorry if you’re disappointed, but this is us live-blogging the first 3 rounds of the draft. The Flyers are obviously a part of that, but we’re providing coverage for more than just the Flyers.

      • Jay

I appreciate the idea of blogging about the draft but draft coverage just isnt about the player being selected it should be about the team and the potential of a team drafting a start to lead them to the cup. For a decent amount of the picks the statements have been “Excellent Pick” Where is some analysis. if you dont really know about the prospect being drafted maybe look at the team thats picking him and see how it affects the offseason.

        • Jay

          Also why no proplayer comparison?

  • Jay

Here is my next question. Do you guys have any idea why Vancouver wouldnt have traded Schiender to Edmonton? Rumor was Edmonton was offering a lot more. Prospects and draft picks. The only person i think that might be happy with this is Lou Lamarillo. Broduer just realized that the Devils want to move on sooner rather then later and he can’t Brett Farve them. Schiender just wants to be a starting goalie.

  • Jay

Are you guys going to live blog the day free agency opens up too? why the hate on the flyers of old? Jagr even this season makes all the players around him better. Gagne offers just some added depth. Im not asking for them to go drag Jeremy Roenick from the announce booth. But maybe they should since he is terrible.

  • Jay

is this where Tim Panaccio gets his expert analysis from?

  • Jay

Tom why do you like the Hagg pick and the Santini pick?

  • BigPoppaPuck

Thanks for the analysis on the BOlland deal.

  • BigPoppaPuck

Please stop this silly charade of a live blog. Zero Analysis.

    • http://www.flyersfaithful.com/ Kevin Christmann

It’s not easy to keep up with the pace of the 2nd and 3rd rounds and comment on every pick.

Tom and Jared will be giving some thoughts on the first 3 rounds now that they are complete.

    • http://www.flyersfaithful.com/ Kevin Christmann

Also…you spent over 5 hours and 30 comments in this post. Sorry it didn’t meet your expectations

      • BigPoppaPuck

i am a fan of some of the posts from this site. thought i would get a little more out of it.

        • http://www.flyersfaithful.com/ Kevin Christmann

Well, as we said from the get-go, our intention was to cover every pick through 3 rounds. Not just the Flyers picks. The pace was quick, and especially in Rounds 2 and 3, it was tough for them to comment on every selection.

We do have more detailed articles on the 3 Flyers selections so far.

          • BigPoppaPuck

while the Flyers are my squad and love reading everything about what they could do. i wasnt looking for specifics on every selection but the guys the knew about and just a look at the overall idea of a draft. The last write up was good but would love to have seen Pro Player Comparisons on some of these guys. The draft is the start of the offseason so it would have been great to get some perspective on how some of the draft picks affect a team’s offseason plan. Just like the trade of Corey Scheninder how does that affect Brodeur and the Devils plans. Bolland got delt how does that help Toronto and Chicago.
