Flyers select goaltender Merrick Madsen in the 6th round

In the 6th round of the 2013 NHL draft, the Flyers took goaltender Merrick Madsen from Proctor Academy in New Hampshire.

The 6’4” 177lb goaltender was rated the 26th North American goaltender by Central Scouting Services.

Proctor Academy’s coach Mike Walsh had this to say in a great profile of Madsen on WesternCollegHockeyBlog.com:

“He’s very tall. He has a big wingspan and takes up a lot of the net. He reminds me of [former NBA star] Kevin McHale with his long arms,” said Walsh, a former standout at Colgate University. “He’s so athletic and coordinated. Physically, you can see why NHL scouts have been so interested,” added Walsh.

He will apparently play next season for the Des Moines Bucaneers in the United States Hockey League (USHL)
