US-ehhhhhh: Team America unveils Olympic Jerseys

Now while there aren’t any Philadelphia Flyers up for the US Olympic team at the moment, I’m still assuming most of you Flyers fans will also be rooting for the old stars and stripes come February.

On Tuesday, August 27th, Team USA unveiled the jerseys that they will be wearing in the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The results are…underwhelming.

What is this fake lace nonsense? The weird dark blue stars are one thing, but fake laces? Unacceptable. Nike is making me thank my lucky stars for Reebok. You know, the same company that introduced us to this blandness from a few years back.

The crest has people split. It feels like it’s going for a classic look, but I don’t think it achieves that. It’s too small and I’m not a fan of how much bigger it is at the bottom than the top. Overall, I wish they had gone with a straighter design like the US Men’s Soccer Team (s/t @jimmydonofrio) or something more proportional like the NHL logo.

An overall preferable look would be the simple “USA” on the front, but that apparently wasn’t an option. Apparently the there is a rule that the “Olympic jerseys could not use the same logo as the governing bodies for sponsorship reasons” (this info per Jim Britt). That’s a shame, because the plain old USA just works.

Kinda crude of Nike to put the swoosh in such a conspicuous place, right across from where the “A” and “C” will be. The stars on the shoulder are a mistake, and the USA symbol is reminiscent of a park ranger logo than one befitting a team playing for honor on the world stage.
