Gameday FAQ – Flyers vs Maple Leafs vs Capitals

Here is your Philadelphia Flyers Gameday FAQ for Monday, September 16, 2013. The Flyers have split into two squads for the preseason and both will be playing tonight.

When and where are the Flyers playing?

Group A is playing in Toronto at 7:00pm. Group B is also playing at 7:00pm, but in Philadelphia.

Why would they have them both play at the same time? Do they hate us?

I don’t know, buddy. Maybe Paul Holmgren can split himself in two, watch both games with his full attention, and combine back together with the full knowledge he requires.

Fair enough. Who are the opponents?

Group A (should I just call them the Gold Team?) is facing the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Group B (the Blue Team) is facing the Washington Capitals.

How can I watch/listen to these games?

The game in Philadelphia is being broadcast via PhiladelphiaFlyers.com. The game in Toronto will be on the radio (97.5 The Fanatic). You could combine these to get some confusing and mismatched images, I guess.

*sigh* Seriously?

Yes, seriously. It’s the preseason. Half of these guys are wearing the only Flyers jersey that they’ll get to wear this year. Quit it with the attitude, Mister, or I’m sending Craig Berube over to teach you some manners.

Who do I have to look forward to seeing in orange and black?

Each roster has a mix of young and veteran players.

The group facing the Capitals in Philadelphia features Ray Emery (back in a Flyers uni for game action for the first time since 2010), Jason Akeson, Mark Streit, Sean Couturier, Samuel Morin, Michael Raffl, Kimmo Timonen, Jakub Voracek, and, everyone’s new favorite, Vincent Lecavalier, among others. You can find a full list here. Apparently Lecavalier will be centering Wayne Simmonds and Michael Raffl tonight, something to keep a close eye on. Craig Berube will be behind the bench, and I’m sure he’s going to give out some mean glares.

The group in Toronto features Cal Heeter (who is starting the game tonight), Steve Mason, Brayden Schenn, Luke Schenn, Erik Gustafsson, Andrej Meszaros, Hal Gill, and Max Talbot, among others. Peter Laviolette will be chewing gum and barking orders from the bench.

Choose carefully, or you could seriously hurt one group’s feelings.

Who do I have to look forward to viciously booing?

The Capitals are projected to have Michael Neuvirth start in net, while also having guys like Eric Fehr, Joel Ward, Martin Erat, John Erskine, and John Carlson on the ice. Full projections can be found here.

The Maple Leafs should be rolling out a familiar face in James van Riemsdyk, as well as the ever dour Phil Kessel, Tyler Bozak, David Clarkson, and fresh new goaltender Jonathan Bernier per James Mirtle.

Anything else I should know?

Captain Claude Giroux is still recovering from his golf accident, so we won’t be seeing him.

Steve Mason had a bit of rough start in last night’s preseason opener in London, Ontario. Will he rebound when he gets in the game tonight? Is Steve Mason, the destroyer of hope in Columbus, back!? IS IT TIME TO PANIC!?!?!?!?
