Now that training camp has officially started, we can start to see some of the position battles with our own eyes. Perhaps the two biggest spots up for grabs are the third line wing position and then rounding out the sixth and seventh spots on the blueline.
Who do you want to win the spot on the 3rd line? Newly signed Michael Raffl is an intriguing name but making the jump straight to the NHL is probably a lot to ask. Tye McGinn is a realistic in-house option based on his play last year. Former first round pick Scott Laughton is probably the most talented but would the team move him away from his natural center position?
The defense is probably more intriguing. There are a lot of bodies competing for the bottom end of the depth chart. Marc-Andre Bourdon no longer appears to be a candidate because of concussion symptoms. Will Andrej Meszaros stick around? Does Bruno Gervais maintain his place on the roster? Can Hal Gill make the team? Will a youngster force his way onto the roster?
Edit: Adding Gustafsson as an option rather than a given because…well…I can’t count.
