Flyperbole: Rumor Ruminations on Brayden Schenn, Luke Schenn, Sean Couturier

Rumors, rumors, winning certainly doesn’t stop them. Brayden Schenn seems to be the focus of the rumor mill this week.

Darren Dreger mentioned on TSN that he’s been hearing Brayden Schenn’s name pop up in trade rumors. Per the transcript on TSN:

“Now the Flyers aren’t trying to push out Schenn – they may want to push out his brother Luke – but what they’ve told teams quietly is that if there is the right deal available, if they can find the right fit, then absolutely they would include Brayden Schenn in a trade scenario. And we know Paul Holmgren likes to make that big blockbuster deal.”

Lil’ Schenn is one of the Flyers’ top scorers so far this season, and a highly valued commodity. I don’t want to trade him, especially as he was the cornerstone in the Mike Richards deal, but I am curious as to what kind of haul the Flyers could get for the young forward.

The one name I’ve heard mentioned is the Maple Leafs’ Jake Gardiner. This is based purely on speculation from Nick Kypreos and the known interest of the Maple Leafs in Brayden. You can find Kypreos’ comment on the matter at the 3:30 mark of this video.

Bob McKenzie also came out and said on TSN Radio that the Flyers want a really good defenseman in exchange for Sean Couturier or Brayden Schenn. That was pretty much assumed as that SHOULD be the asking price for a team that struggles to properly develop defensemen. Still, it’s always nice to get confirmation from a pro like McKenzie.

I suppose the Flyers could always go after Michael Del Zotto, right? The Rangers defenseman has been reported The Rangers and Flyers have such a civil history of trading between their two compatible franchises…

(psst, not a chance in Hell)

The fact that these two valuable, young commodities keep coming up in discussions for defensemen shows the Flyers’ dissatisfaction with the position. The defense hasn’t been as glaring of an issue of late due to Craig Berube’s increased focus on defense and the Flyers’ stellar goaltending to this point. The fact that Luke Schenn’s name keeps popping up also says a lot about how the Flyers feel about the young defenseman.

We discussed Luke Schenn on here last week, and it hurts my brain to think about the Flyers already giving up on him after trading away James van Riemsdyk. JVR has been great for the Maple Leafs, and the Flyers should have gotten more for him. They’re not going to get anywhere near the same value for Luke Schenn because people don’t value slow, bruiser defensemen as much these days.

It doesn’t help that the Flyers have a glut of second-tier defensemen. They’ve got a bunch of pretty good guys. Andrej Meszaros is an expensive healthy scratch that no one seems to particularly want. Hal Gill, well, he’s your 7th/8th guy for a reason. No one wants Mark Streit’s contract. Kimmo Timonen is old, expensive, and still a valuable piece on the team. That leaves Braydon Coburn, Erik Gustafsson, Nicklas Grossmann, and Luke Schenn as trade bait.

Will one of them go to clean up that jumble? We have seen in the past that it doesn’t hurt to have a surplus of defensemen, just in case.

Per David Strehle on Twitter, the following scouts attended the Flyers-Sabres game on Thursday:

Additionally, Fred Poulin tweeted that the Canadiens have been scouting the Flyers quite a bit this week.

Obviously, scouts are pretty common, but it’s always intriguing when they show up for multiple games. We can only speculate so much. Please don’t take this as, “ZOMG, FLYERS AND CANADIENS ARE WORKING OUT A BLOCKBUSTER DEAL FOR P.K. SUBBAN!!!” However, it is something worth keeping an eye on. We all know how much Montreal likes French Canadian guys.
