Claude Giroux’s power play goal early in the second period would prove to be the game winner, as the Flyers held on to beat the New York Islanders 5-2.
Matt Read and Wayne Simmonds scored 59 seconds apart in the second period to give the Flyers an early 2-0 lead. Sean Couturier and Steve Downie assisted Read’s goal. Vincent LeCavalier and Eric Gustafsson assisted on Simmonds goal. Brayden Schenn scored an insurance goal in the third period from Giroux and Jakub Voracek. Read would pot his second goal of the game, an empty netter, to ice the game. “Stone Cold” Steve Mason was solid again for the Flyers, stopping 36-38 Islander shots. The Flyers have now recorded points in seven straight games, going 6-0-1 in the process.
John Tavares and Eric Boulton scored the Islander goals. Starting goaltender Kevin Poulin was pulled early in the second period after allowing three goals on 13 shots. Anders Nilsson came in to replace Poulin and stopped 15-16 pucks. The Islanders have now lost their last three games.
The first period appeared to be early season Flyers. Few scoring chances for the home team and more scoring chances for the visitors. The results continued to be the same, as Steve Mason stood tale. He made big saves chances by Michael Grabner and Josh Bailey, as both came in solo on the Flyers goaltender.
After a lackluster first period, the Flyers came out flying in the second. Just 46 seconds into the period, Matt Read scored his first of the night off a rebound from Sean Couturier’s shot. Wayne Simmonds would put the Flyers up 2-0 just 59 seconds later, as he took a feed from Vincent LeCavalier and scored from the right circle on a wrist shot.
The Captain would net what would become the game winner just over two minutes later on the power play.
The Flyers shot out to a 3-0 lead just 3:48 into the second period and the Islanders were onto their second goalie of the night.
After the Flyers barrage, the game turned into the Islanders favor. New York controlled the puck and the pace of the game, and were finally able to solve Steve Mason, as Thomas Vanek found a cutting Tavares with a slick pass in the slot that the Islanders captain tapped in.
After two periods, the Flyers led 3-1, but New York had the momentum.
New York kept their momentum early in the third, as they were buzzing around the ice. Just 2:39 into the third period, Eric Boulton cut the Flyers lead to one goal after he scored off a feed from Casey Cizikas.
The Flyers would continue to play on their heels, continually icing the puck. Head coach Craig Berube would eventually use his time out to attend to calm his team, but the Islanders kept the pressure on.
The play continued to go New York’s way until Jakub Voracek made a strong play behind the boards and found Brayden Schenn in the slot. Schenn would beat Islanders goaltender Anders Nilsson to give the Flyers their fourth goal of the game.
Matt Read would score his second of the game, an unassisted, empty net goal to conclude the scoring and give the Flyers a 5-2 victory.
