After Beatdown by Blackhawks, Flyers Keep Montreal at Bay in 2-1 Victory

The night after a brutal 7-2 beatdown by the Chicago Blackhawks, the Flyers bounced back with a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Michael Raffl and Claude Giroux lit the lamp for Philadelphia, while Alex Galchenyuk scored the lone goal for Montreal. Steve Mason made a total of twenty saves on twenty-one shots. Carey Price staved off 25 of 27 attempts from the Flyers.

Raffl’s second goal of the season opened up the scoring with just over six minutes to go in the first period, with assists coming from Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux. Both teams went on the power play thanks to penalties to Sean Couturier and Alexi Emelin, but neither was able to capitalize with a man advantage. The first period came to an end with the Flyers leading 1-0, shot totals in their favor at 9-4.

The Flyers went on the power play about six minutes into the second period after an unintentional elbow from PK Subban to the face of Jakub Voracek. Unfortunately, they spent a little too much time passing the puck and not shooting it, so that 5-on-4 was a wasted opportunity for the orange & black. However, Giroux’s goal put the team up 2-0 at 9:43 of the second period.

With 3:45 left to go in the second period, Emelin elbowed Steve Downie while in the defensive zone. Downie, who suffered a concussion last month, was down on the ice for a short while and needed help getting back to the bench and down the tunnel. Emelin received a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct penalty.

As the seconds ticked down towards the end of the second period, Steve Mason made a terrific pass down the ice to Matt Read, who passed it to Brayden Schenn, but Price came up huge for Montreal and managed to keep their deficit at two goals as the period drew to a close.

Philadelphia entered the third period with 1:09 left on Emelin’s major, and with Steve Downie on the bench. It was a mostly uneventful period with a total of 12 shots (Flyers 8, Canadiens 4) until 6:35 into the third when there was some chaos around the Philadelphia net and it appeared that Montreal had scored. The goal was waived off immediately by the ref, and after a quick review, determined that it had been pushed in by Brian Gionta’s glove. The game continued on with the Flyers still up by two goals.

It appeared as if Steve Mason was cruising to a shutout victory, but Galchenyuk’s goal put the Canadiens on the board with just 55 seconds left to go. The Flyers held onto the lead however, and finished with a 2-1 victory. And the game finished with some bad blood brewing between the two teams, with scrums both near Mason’s net and around center ice before it died down.

Penalties:

Sean Couturier — high-sticking (5:04, 1st)

Alexi Emelin — interference (15:36, 1st)
