Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players, media personnel, and broadcast botches. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more!
On December 23rd, a day that will live in infamy, Mike Smith scored his second career goal, an overtime winner no less, as a goaltender in the NHL… Unfortunately for Smith and the Phoenix Coyotes, it was on himself. Fortunately for the Buffalo Sabres and all of us: MIKE SMITH SCORED A GOAL WITH HIS BUTT.
If you haven’t seen this amazing goal yet, please, please, PLEASE check it out here:
Tough break for Smith who, up to that point, had stopped 30 of 31 shots. Technically he stopped the 31st shot too, but just slid himself and the puck into the net. The play probably should have been blown dead since there’s no way the officials could have seen the puck after it landed in Smith’s pants. Even if they did see it land there, the puck clearly wasn’t playable at that point. But since the whistles were not blown, we’re left with one of the greatest gaffes in NHL history. So everyone should say thank you to Mike Smith, Chris Rooney, and Greg Kimmerly for allowing this to happen.
Happy Holidays and let’s go Flyers!
