Point/Counterpoint: To match or not to match?

Welcome to another edition of Point/Counterpoint, where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes square off, debating an issue with their own unique style and flair. This week, Nick D and Bob H “discuss” whether or not the Flyers should sign their big name future restricted free agents. At the end of the 2013-14 season, the Philadelphia Flyers have a couple big restricted free agents due for new deals. Those RFAs are Sean Couturier, Claude Giroux, and Brayden Schenn. Assuming that the rules of the current CBA change, but still allow for offer sheets, and that the salary cap floors and ceilings will …

Another one bites the dust

Add Andreas Lilja to the growing list of unfortunates in this offseason. The Swedish defenseman pronounced himself out for the next four months after undergoing hip surgery, according to a report in a Swedish-language publication translated by Bill Meltzer on this otherwise beautiful Sunday. The 37-year-old totaled six assists in only 46 regular-season games for Philly last season, his first here after spending 2010-11 with the Anaheim Ducks. Lilja was also on the shelf due to a high ankle sprain suffered on the day after Thanksgiving in a matinee home victory over the Montreal Canadiens, but returned before Christmas. He …

Bourdon, Laughton signed

At least one more puzzle to the Flyers defensive picture has been solved, as restricted free agent blueliner Marc-Andre Bourdon was signed to a multi-year contract extension reported to be for two years with an average annual value of $612,500 per season. That’s a significant down-grade from his initial entry-level deal whose cap hit was $875,000 according to NHLNumbers.com. Bourdon, who will turn 23 on September 17, missed time last season due to a concussion. Still, he made an impression during several call-ups, totaling four goals and seven points in 45 games for Philadelphia. In addition, first-round selection Scott Laughton …

Meszaros out following surgery on Achilles tendon

The plot thickens regarding the health of the defense. “Andrej had successful surgery this morning to repair a torn right Achilles tendon. The surgery was performed by Dr. Steve Raikin at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren announced Tuesday morning. Andrej was injured last week during summer training in Slovakia. Andrej will be out indefinitely.” The 26-year-old totaled seven goals and 25 points in 62 regular-season games last year, and was voted the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the club’s best defenseman the year before. Injuries of this type typically take months to heal and recover, as we’ve seen …

Flyers, Sinclair agree to 4-year deal

The conundrum of replacing the offense and leadership that departed with Jaromir Jagr to Dallas has been solved. On Tuesday morning, the Philadelphia Flyers made another stealth move to bolster the forward ranks, bringing in forward Christine Sinclair on a four-year deal reported to be worth $17 million. “We’re thrilled to have acquired Christine’s services,” said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. “Her fearlessness around the net, toughness and scoring ability with all parts of her body, along with her most important assets of Canadian birth and training, will be a valuable asset to our hockey club. In addition, at age …

Laviolette gets contract extension

In yet another stealth, early-morning move, the Philadelphia Flyers extended the contract of head coach Peter Laviolette. “We are thrilled to have Peter continue his work with our group as we push to compete for the Stanley Cup,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said.  “Peter has done a terrific job for us and is very deserving of this extension.” No terms of the deal were disclosed, but multiple reports stated that the pact is for two years, lasting through the 2014-15 campaign. Laviolette, a Massachusetts native, was named to the post on December 4, 2009 to replace John Stevens. Despite an …

Jim Jackson: The Flyers Faithful interview

Jim Jackson has been a part of the fabric of Flyers hockey ever since he was brought to the organization as the radio play-by-play voice back in 1993. On the advent of his 20th year calling NHL action here in Philadelphia, JJ was kind enough to talk to Bob H. on a variety of topics related to his journey through the years that has landed him with one of the top clubs in the National Hockey League and as a fixture for not only hockey, but also Phillies baseball. BH: It’s common knowledge that you’re from Upstate New York. From …
