Holmgren talks Weber and more 7/25/12

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Q: Because of the way the offer sheet to Shea Weber was front-loaded, did you expect Nashville to match it? “No, it was structured where we were hopeful that they wouldn’t match it. But, obviously they did and as I said yesterday we wish Shea and the Predators all the best. We tried to add, in our minds, one of the best defenseman in the game to a good, young, up-and-coming team, and it didn’t work.” Q: When did you learn that [The Predators] were going to match [the offer sheet], and how much of …

Weber report reminiscent of Gratton deal

The Flyers had just fleeced the Tampa Bay Lightning in their quest to return to glory mere weeks after being bounced from the Stanley Cup Finals by the Detroit Red Wings in a shocking four-game sweep. It took nearly an entire Summer to do it, but in the madness that was the Offer Sheet scramble of the 1997 offseason, Bob Clarke had apparently just increased his chances to return to the title round ten-fold. He acquired the services of Group II restricted free agent and hulking center Chris Gratton from the Bolts on August 20, but not by the traditional …

Flyers talk at rookie camp

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers G Anthony Stolarz Q: Do you have any expectations of this week? “I’m just going to take it in and enjoy it. It’s my first camp and I’m just going to go with it and see what happens.” Q: Have you set any goals for this week? “Just in the scrimmage not to give up any goals and stop every puck I can.” Q: How important is it to know these guys off the ice? “It’s very important. You might be playing with these guys. You look around and there a lot of guys playing …

“Rusty” speaks about Philly redux

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Q: On returning to the Flyers “I’m really excited.  I started my career there and I have great memories there.  I’m excited to have a good team and a great organization.” Q: Do you look back on the day you were traded from here and think I never would have won the Cup in Tampa, wouldn’t have scored that big goal, wouldn’t have won the Cup in Pittsburgh? “You always sometimes look back and see what journey you took, but I never looked at it that way, what if I never leave, or other things.  …

Fedotenko returns to Flyerdom

Yes, everything old is new again. The Flyers announced on Thursday afternoon that the club has inked forward Ruslan Fedotenko to a one-year contract worth $1.75 million. “Ruslan is a good two-way forward that can play either wing and will bring experience and depth to our forward group,” said Flyers GM Paul Holmgren in a statement attached to the signing. Fedotenko, a Flyers killer and two-time Stanley Cup champion (2004 with Tampa Bay, 2009 in Pittsburgh), was signed by Philadelphia in 2000. He spent his first two North American seasons with the Orange and Black (2000-02), totaling 33 goals and …

Carle headed back to Hockey Bay

Despite earlier reports from multiple sources which seemed to reveal that Matt Carle wanted to remain with the Flyers and wanted to sign here and that the Flyers wanted him, Carle instead pulled a switcheroo on America’s birthday. The powers of persuasion from Tampa Bay general manager Steve Yzerman were too great, and Carle was signed to a six-year contract. Multiple media reports, including NHL.com, revealed the deal is worth a total of $33.5 million for the duration, with an average annual value of $5.5 million. And so, one of the more polarizing figures in recent club history will no …

Some 4th of July fireworks

For those of us missing the contact that has nothing to do with a wooden bat hitting a baseball, here’s some Old School style holiday hits and fights for the truly hockey starved. It’s a brainless but effective way to kill some of the time spent waiting for the Five Horsemen of Free Agency to make up their damn minds. Happy Independence Day, everyone, from the Flyers Faithful family. First up, a 1990 hits compilation, the kind they used to play on SportsChannel on some lazy Sunday afternoon: Next up, some heated action between the Bruins and Nordiques from 1987 …

Flyers sign three; Syvret returns again

Oh Danny Boy, the ice, the ice is calling… One of three signings by the Flyers on Day Three of Free Agency, Danny Syvret is back for his third turn with the franchise. The 27-year-old defenseman spent last year in the American Hockey League with the Blues’ affiliate in Peoria, tallying seven goals and 42 points in 75 games for the Rivermen. He suited up for a four-game stint with the Flyers two seasons ago, failing to record a point, but appeared in 51 games for the Adirondack Phantoms after his re-acquisition from Anaheim — scoring 10 times with 26 …

Suter, Parise on Flyers’ radar

Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer has revealed a source which says the Flyers have extended 10-year contracts to free agents Ryan Suter and Zach Parise. Those offers have been confirmed by Tim Panaccio and SportsNet’s Nick Kypreos, who wrote that the overtures were in the neighborhood north of $80 million over 12 years. In other ex-Flyers news, Arron Asham has come to terms with the New York Rangers on a two-year deal. That means Asham has completed the Grand Slam within the Atlantic Division, having been signed by all five clubs within.

The Lindros deal: 20 years later

Nobody can ever accuse Ed Snider of not doing everything he can to try and get the Flyers, his baby and lasting legacy, another Stanley Cup. There are many out there who experience Snider as he is now, Uncle Ed living in Malibu, in his later years at turns avuncular and apoplectic in the public eye, now that the Orange and Black have succeeded in keeping up the veneer of a winning club that sometimes gets a fleeting whiff of glory. You’d think he really swung his manhood around by influencing the madness of last June, but there was a …
