Who’s Zoomin’ Who?

While us penguins continue to wilt in the usual Northeastern Summer heat, pining for the days when a cool iceberg awaits our collectively scorched behinds, thoughts about the upcoming (and too far off) season still seep their way into our Sun-addled brains. This is the fourth in a five-part series which intends to examine the ways the Flyers front office, though publicly professing to want to win the Cup by any means necessary, just ends up conducting business as usual year in and year out. Once upon a time, Philly scribes new to this game of hockey spun wonderful tales of general manager …

MasterGame Theater

It’s time for another trip down the Orange-and-Black-flecked memory lane as we all drip with sweat from the heat of August in the city or the salt of the ocean at the Jersey shore…think about it, we’re less than two months from the start of the regular season… So, to get us all riled up and to recall the deep-seated hatred of our enemies, I thought I’d dip back into the playoff pool for this installment of MasterGame Theater. It is our honor to present to you Game 3 of the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals between the Flyers and New …

Alive at 45?

While us penguins continue to wilt in the usual Northeastern Summer heat, pining for the days when a cool iceberg awaits our collectively scorched behinds, thoughts about the upcoming (and too far off) season still seep their way into our Sun-addled brains. This is the third in a five-part series which intends to examine the ways the Flyers front office, though publicly professing to want to win the Cup by any means necessary, just ends up conducting business as usual year in and year out. The facts are simple and impressive. In 3,424 total regular-season games, the Orange and Black have played to …

Snider to enter U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame

The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Monday afternoon that chairman Ed Snider is an inductee for the 2011 class of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. In a sense, the selection of the man intent on protecting his singular legacy as the person who made the Flyers what they are today was inevitable, but it was still a shockingly long time in coming. Snider was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder way back in 1988, while he still held considerable sway over Flyers business and also that of the NHL’s Board of Governors.   Snider, who has been the …

Flyers form new affiliation with Trenton of ECHL

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have entered into a minor league affiliation agreement with the Trenton Titans of the ECHL for the 2011-12 season, according to club President Peter Luukko. The agreement also includes cross-promotional opportunities to help the Titans sell tickets through the Flyers fan base. “The Philadelphia Flyers and the Comcast-Spectacor Family of Companies are excited to be affiliated with the Trenton Titans,” said Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko. “As our ECHL affiliate, we’re confident that our prospects will be playing in an environment here in Trenton that will help them develop …

Unsteady Landings on Airstrip One

While us penguins continue to wilt in the usual Northeastern Summer heat, pining for the days when a cool iceberg awaits our collectively scorched behinds, thoughts about the upcoming (and too far off) season still seep their way into our Sun-addled brains. This is the second in a five-part series which intends to examine the ways the Flyers front office, though publicly professing to want to win the Cup by any means necessary, just ends up conducting business as usual year in and year out. It’s inevitable that the one true face of the Philadelphia Flyers will make his presence known in a …

Toasting Doc

This afternoon, the New Jersey Devils announced that Mike “Doc” Emrick will be leaving his local TV post to work full-time for NBC/Versus. Emrick posted a touching farewell letter to his fans on the Devils’ web site, which I will repost here: “To the marvelous fans of the New Jersey Devils: A good friend advised me several years ago that before any major decision, you should look in the mirror and look at your birth certificate. Since my contracts with MSG, VERSUS, and NBC all expired late this spring, this was another of those times. I discovered that the birth …

Flyers ark is full with three signings

The Flyers filled up their allotted number of contracts on Tuesday afternoon, having signed restricted free-agent Jon Kalinski to a one-year contract extension and inked goaltender Jason Bacashihua to a one-year deal. In addition, the club locked up fourth-round draft pick Marcel Noebels to an entry-level contract. Bacashihua has been a career minor-leaguer with 38 games of NHL experience and a 7-17-4 record with St. Louis from 2005-07. He has gone 58-51-9 in 102 games along with a 2.72 GAA and a .910 save percentage during the last four years in the AHL with Hershey and Lake Erie. Kalinski, who …

Hard Choices Always Have to be Made

While us penguins continue to wilt in the usual Northeastern Summer heat, pining for the days when a cool iceberg awaits our collectively scorched behinds, thoughts about the upcoming (and too far off) season still seep their way into our Sun-addled brains. This is the first in a five-part series which intends to examine the ways the Flyers front office, though publicly professing to want to win the Cup by any means necessary, just ends up conducting business as usual year in and year out. It could have been said any time over the last 25 years: At the end of the painful …
