Labour Bored

Earlier in the week, it was revealed by multiple sources throughout North America, TSN and RDS chief among them, that the National Hockey League Players Association intended to file briefs on behalf of their clients to the Quebec Labor Board. Added to that, was the report of a similar case to be presented in Alberta on behalf of the two clubs residing in its two largest cities. The argument, at its core, states that since the union is not certified in the province, it is illegal for the Canadiens organization to lock out players. This is a stunning turnaround from …

Lokomotiv: One year later

Today marks the one year anniversary of the Lokomotiv air tragedy, during which all 45 members of the team, coaching staff and crew perished as their plane failed to take off from an air field near the club’s home city of Yaroslavl. As it has been for many seasons in the past, the Flyers provide an attractive national presence (thanks, Comcast ownership!), and are set to be featured on American television a whopping 25 times. CBA update: Olive branches, calm before the storm

On Wednesday evening, NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr stood before reporters in Toronto, to give a briefing on what occurred in morning meetings between he, Commissioner Gary Bettman, deputy commish Bill Daly and others. Essentially, nothing happened. Well, not exactly nothing. Because an afternoon session was cancelled but here’s Fehr to tell you exactly how much of nothing happened, along with how the next potential batch of nothing might happen: Agent Allan Walsh, who, for obvious reasons is very much keyed into the proceedings, revealed earlier in the day a key proponent of the players’ proposal, one which had a …
