The Dirty Half Dozen: Six choices for the next Flyers head coach

No matter which way you figure, the sands in the hourglass of Peter Laviolette’s tenure as Philadelphia Flyers head coach are rapidly descending towards the bottom. The power vacuum, whether it is created during this six-day block, at the trade deadline or following the completion of this truncated season, will leave a huge question mark as far as discerning which direction the franchise will head going forward. When it occurs, Laviolette will be the latest in a string of those given the reins, who didn’t manage to make it through four seasons at the helm. That’s where our feats of …

Titans captain done for season

Andy Bohmbach endured a concussion, multiple American Hockey League call-ups that went nowhere, and near-constant roster upheaval, but always held it down this year as the heart, soul and captain of the Trenton Titans. His season is done. Per Mike Ashmore of the Trentonian, Bohmbach was placed on the 21-day injured reserve list by the club on Wednesday, stripping the struggling team of their best player for the final games of the regular season. The report is he’ll need shoulder surgery. Trenton is in action later tonight in Elmira, in the club’s final matchup this year, then will come home …

Report: Flyers to break bank over Giroux extension

According to John Boruk, host over at Comcast SportsNet Philly, the Flyers are about to go all in on captain Claude Giroux. His tweet from Monday: “You can draw up the contract right now, but Giroux will get 71-72 million over 8 years. It’s just a matter of when it gets done.” Giroux has struggled during this truncated season, his first as team captain following a breakout 93-point performance in a full campaign last year. He’s got nine goals and 26 points in 30 games with four power-play markers and a pair of game-winners, but is a minus-9 — indicative …

Late last night, the report from Bob McKenzie from TSN of Canada was that the Flyers signed free agent forward Kyle Flanagan from St. Lawrence to an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of this season and a one-year deal for 2013-14. He is expected to report to Adirondack of the AHL by Friday at the latest. Flanagan, a native of the university town of Canton, New York, finished his senior season with 15 goals and 47 points in 32 games. His 47 points placed second on the club to junior phenom Greg Carey, who leads the country with 28 …

Reading’s Gill named ECHL’s top goaltender

Stepping into the shoes of Philipp Grubauer, who aided the Royals in their ascension to the top of the Eastern Conference before leaving for Hershey and the Capitals, hasn’t been easy for whomever spent time in the Reading crease in the second half of this season. Nonetheless, with Larry Courville’s club vying for the Brabham Cup and best record in the ECHL, Riley Gill has filled the vacancy beyond all expectations. On Tuesday, he was named the league’s top goalie for the week of March 11-17. The 28-year-old Minnesota native finished 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .969 …

Board of Governors approve realignment plan

Realignment comin’ For the first time since the end of the 1997-98 season, the National Hockey League will feature only four divisions, and for the first time in 15 years, every team is guaranteed to play in the arena of every other team thanks to the new plan approved by the league’s Board of Governors on Thursday. “This goes into the good news category,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Thursday. “We can begin the process of preparing next year’s schedule.” Here’s a quick and easy infographic from NHL.com explaining the situation: Last week, the NHL reported that the divisions would …

Pronger still hopeful, but odds are not in his favor

It’s all but a done deal. Chris Pronger will never play another game in the NHL. If only he’d realize it. If only he could say it, and if only the announcement could ease a burden he would place on the Philadelphia Flyers if it were finally revealed in full. While it’s a noble cause he’s undertaking, the slow, painful process of recovering from a severe eye injury and concussion suffered back in October of 2011, Pronger is fooling himself and doing a bad job of fooling all of us with the notion that his goal is to get back …

419, or how the Flyers engaged in a record-breaking brawl which wasn’t their fault

When is a Friday night hockey game more than just a Friday night hockey game? When the two teams you’re watching erupt into three separate acts of a massive line brawl near the end of the contest that result in a still-standing NHL record for combined penalty minutes with 419, and cause the re-shaping of the rules regarding fisticuffs as the league attempts to reformulate its image after a lockout. Martin Havlat should be able to tell you the answer to that question in full. After all, it was his ability to run around one week earlier, shoving his stick …

Shanabanned: Harry Z gets four games

This is the kind of season it’s been so far: the National Hockey League ignores the fact that the Philadelphia Flyers are taking time off from their busy schedule to hold their annual carnival on Sunday afternoon, issuing a four-game suspension to Harry Zolnierczyk. Zolnierczyk was given a major for charging and a game misconduct near the midway point of the first period in a 2-1 Flyers win, after issuing a hard hit to Ottawa defenseman Mike Lundin. Lundin left the game and did not return with a suspected head injury. Hit up the link to see Brendan Shanahan’s explanation. …

Homer, Gagne talk about busy Tuesday

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Flyers GM Paul Holmgren Will Gagne make the team better? PH:  “He improves our depth up front automatically. Obviously with the injury bug and Matt Read being out and now we lost Tye McGinn last night for a few weeks. We have some holes.  Simon is a guy who has a lot of experience and played in a lot of positions, penalty kill, power play and regular shifts.  He is a good two way player that can skate.   We think he will add to us a lot.” What’s wrong with Tye? PH:  “He has a …
