NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan laid down the law for the first time in the 2013 season, suspending Flyers forward Brayden Schenn for his hit in last night’s game against Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov.

Rinaldo hurt, McGinn called up

As if it weren’t bad enough the Flyers fell to 0-2 with a 5-2 loss at Buffalo on Sunday, forward Zac Rinaldo will be out of the lineup for at least one week after suffering a 20-stitch gash on his right leg. The feisty winger left the game in the first period and did not return after taking the worst of a collision with Sabres defenseman Robyn Regehr. “It was a weird feeling. I looked at my pad, and the sock was cut. It was like an X-acto knife cut it. I saw that and I was pissed off it …

2013 AHL All-Star rosters revealed; Gustafsson lone Phantom

The American Hockey League released the Eastern and Western Conference rosters for its mid-season celebration on Thursday evening. Quite predictably, the Adirondack Phantoms were not prominently featured, save for defenseman Erik Gustafsson. The 24-year-old Swede has totaled three goals and 14 points in 24 games, but has been hampered by an ankle injury suffered while blocking a shot roughly one week before Christmas. If he plays, he’ll join Michael Leighton, 2012 (Atlantic City, NJ); Jon Matsumoto, 2010 (Portland, ME) and Danny Syvret, 2009 (Worcester, MA) as members of the Glens Falls AHL club to make an All-Star appearance. Gustafsson was …

Titans slip by Royals thanks to OT magic from Bohmbach

On a dreary day outside that was just as gloomy inside due to the fact that there seemed to be roughly the same amount of hockey players on the ice as fans in the seats, Andy Bohmbach provided a ray of hope. For one day at least, the last place team in the Atlantic and the Eastern Conference outshined the best in the Atlantic and the East as  Bohmbach recorded the game-winning score with 26.1 seconds remaining in overtime to get the Trenton Titans a 4-3 win over the Reading Royals. “Every game you play you want to prove a …

Q: What brings you out today? A: I just thought it was a nice day for a stroll in New Jersey…No I’m thrilled to be back, it’s exciting.  I’m looking forward to the next 48 games and hopefully the playoffs.  The fact that I told the league to get it done by my birthday made me feel real good. Q: What do you remember from the last short season? A: I remember that it was a short season but we did very well.  I remember Eric Lindros winning the Hart Trophy and overall it was a pretty good year. Q: …

Briere wrist update and other Flyers news

Flyers winger Danny Briere “had” a “hairline fracture” in his wrist that was injured while he played in Germany, but team GM Paul Holmgren says it is healing, while the man himself says it is “healing nicely.” That’s the juiciest piece of information to come out of Day 2 of an abbreviated training camp. Nonetheless, it is expected the 35-year-old Quebecer will miss opening weekend against the Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. It’s tough news for the scrappy forward, who seemed to enjoy more success playing overseas in the first half of this season than he did last year in Philly …

Fantastic Finish, Sputtering Start: The 1995 Flyers

This beloved team defied expectations, growing stronger as the season went on and eventually landed two wins shy of the Stanley Cup Finals. It consistently defied expectations and exceeded dreams, winning an Atlantic Division title, two playoff rounds including an unthinkable second-round sweep of the defending champions, and restored faith in a proud franchise. Despite the glory of remembrance, it wasn’t all champagne and roses and hope from the start. It also started out the season 3-7-1, were shut out in back-to-back games including giving a former expansion club its first-ever shutout victory, failed to produce much offense during a …

2013 Flyers schedule released

With a Memorandum of Understanding now agreed upon by both the owners and the players’ union, the madness is about to begin. Several minutes ago, the Philadelphia Flyers released their 2013 schedule, and as had been reported, Opening Day will be 3 PM on Saturday, January 19 on NBC against the Pittsburgh Penguins on South Broad Street. “I’m happy that we’re back to playing hockey,” said Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider. “Our fans have waited a long time, and I want to thank them for staying with us. We can’t wait for the season to start.” The remainder of the 48-game …

All Clear: NHLPA ratifies new CBA

We have seen the top of the mountain, and it is good. Earlier on Saturday afternoon, the members of the National Hockey League Players’ Association voted to ratify the new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHLPA and the National Hockey League. That means the final remaining hurdle to the 2013 season has been overcome. From the NHLPA release: “While the players’ vote ratifies the new CBA with the NHL owners, a written Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) consistent with what the players voted on, must be completed before the Agreement becomes final. The NHLPA and the NHL continue their work to …

Late tally sends Stingrays past punchless Titans

The first full night of games following mass call-ups due to the end of the NHL lockout have passed in the ECHL, and the Trenton Titans opened up a two-game home series on Friday night playing like they were trying to figure out just how to deal with the sudden upheaval. So were the South Carolina Stingrays (17-18-4), but the visitors managed to come up two goals better in a 3-1 decision in New Jersey’s capital. Ryan Zapolski, who came into the contest riding a league-best 1.69 goals-against average, stopped 19-of-20 shots for the victorious visitors, and the one he …
