Homer having another “D’oh!” moment

The boys over at Broad Street Hockey have just broken down exactly what happened with today’s roster moves, courtesy of general manager Paul Holmgren’s Knack for Finding the Biggest Bargain. Here they are in a nutshell: Chris Pronger was injured on Thursday night. As a precaution, he’ll be sitting out tonight’s game in Ottawa. Erik Gustafsson was called up yesterday and will play in place of Pronger tonight. Also, Oskars Bartulis is apparently out for the season. Defenseman Nick Boynton was claimed off of waivers today at 12 p.m. Boynton’s addition gives the Flyers one extra player on the roster, …

Spectrum Memories: Life is a Carnival

To celebrate my 25th year of hockey fandom, I will occasionally step into the way-back machine and write about events in the Flyers’ past. For the balance of the season, I will be dipping into the well to ruminate about some things related to my love of the Philadelphia Flyers, and in general about the fan experience as a youngster. This is the eighth in the series of Spectrum Memories. For this bi-monthly installment, I promise there’s no description of anger, violence, vulgar cheering or potentially-fatal illnesses. It’s all about the purely fun aspects of being a Flyers fan. The annual Flyers Carnival was actually …

Quo Vadis?

Now that Nikolay Zherdev has cleared waivers with zero interest from the other 29 clubs in the NHL, it’s basically up to him what happens next. He has several options to keep playing: take a demotion to the minors, flee back to the country formerly known as the U.S.S.R., and (even though it might be dog dumb), sit out risking a suspension and await a deal out of Philly. Adding to the drama was the fact that multiple outlets reported this morning that Zherdev participated in an optional team skate in Voorhees. This, after he fled the same practice facility not 24 …

Zherdev placed on waivers

Nikolay Zherdev’s tenure in Philadelphia has most likely come to an end. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren stated this afternoon that he placed the 26-year-old forward on waivers. "His agent and Nik, they’re obviously not happy with the situation here," Holmgren said. "They’d asked us to look around for options. Nothing really came of that through trades, so we’ll see what happens with this." In his first season with the Flyers, the native of the Ukraine notched 15 goals and 19 points in 47 appearances, but has not suited up since February 10. Just last Friday, Zherdev apparently went missing somewhere within …

Flat Flyers tumble to hungry Coyotes in OT

It’s not every day you can level the accusation at the Eastern Conference leaders, who outshot their opposition by a 39-29 margin, that they played one of their most ineffective games of the season. But it happened on Tuesday night, as the Philadelphia Flyers returned from a successful four-game road trip and were beaten by a better Phoenix Coyotes squad by a 3-2 count in overtime. Shane Doan, the longest-tenured player in the Coyotes/Jets franchise history, notched the winner on a one-timer from the left circle while on a power play with 2:19 left in the extra session. The deciding …
