Then and Now: Ryan Potulny

His time with the Flyers may have spanned over three seasons, but Ryan Potulny only played 44 games for Philadelphia in his career. From 2005-2006 to 2007-2008, Potulny split his time between the Flyers and the Philadelphia Phantoms playing 144 games between both teams. Since the end of the 2007-2008 season, Potulny has suited up for six different teams since his time with the Orange and Black. Let’s look at Potulny then and now. In June of 2008, Potulny was sent to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Danny Syvret. Potulny spent most of the ’08-’09 season with Guillaume Lefebvre on the Oilers’ AHL affiliate, …

Then and Now: Danny Markov

Danny Markov scored 31 goals in his NHL career, three of which came in his 52 games with the Philadelphia Flyers. Two of those goals were notable achievements for the Flyers. Since scoring his last NHL playoff goal with the Flyers in the 2004 playoffs, Markov played two more seasons in the NHL before playing in Russia. Let’s take a look at Markov’s work with the five teams after his days as a Flyer. After scoring 14 points in 44 games with the Carolina Hurricanes, Markov was traded to Philly for forward Justin Williams in the middle of the 2003-2004 …

Then and Now: Bruno St. Jacques

In his 12 years as a professional hockey player, Bruno St. Jacques has never scored 10 goals or 30 points in a season. Playing in three different professional leagues, it seems as though St. Jacques plays best in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). With 61 points and a plus/minus rating of +19 in 138 regular season games over the last three seasons, St. Jacques’ numbers in the DEL aren’t impressive, but they’re the highest in his career to this point. Let’s take a look at St. Jacques’ career since his last game with the Flyers on December 18th, 2002 against the Atlanta …

Then and Now: Branko Radivojevic

Considering Sean Burke went 6-5-2 in 15 starts before leaving in the off-season, and Ben Eager only had nine goals in 113 games for the Flyers, Branko Radivojevic was Philly’s biggest gain in their 2004 trade with the Phoenix Coyotes. Shipping Mike Comrie to the desert, the Flyers received the trio of Burke, Eager, and Radivojevic in return. Burke didn’t play in the 2004 postseason while Eager decided to save his scoring in the playoffs until he was in Chicago. Radivojevic, on the other hand, played in every game during the Flyers’ 2004 playoff run serving as a crucial bottom-six forward. Since leaving Philly, let’s …

Then and Now: Radovan Somik

Alexander Selivanov will be remembered by most NHL fans as a decent winger for the Tampa Bay Lightning back in the mid 1990′s. Currently playing for Bietigheim-Bissingen SC of 2.GBun in Germany, Selivanov has experienced being traded twice in his career. One of those two trades was being shipped to Edmonton in exchange for the infamous Alexandre Daigle. His other trade, back on September 6, 1994, was before he even played a game in the NHL. Selivanov was transferred from Philly to Tampa Bay in exchange for a 4th round pick in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. With that pick the Flyers …

Then and Now: Pavel Brendl

Eric Lindros, at one time, was the face of the Flyers’ franchise. Unfortunately, health issues in addition to an ugly dispute with GM Bob Clarke led to a big  trade in August, 2001, shipping Lindros to the division rival New York Rangers. Since Lindros meant so much to this organization, and since other teams in the league were aware of his capabilities, the Flyers had the opportunity to land key players who may one day become the new face of the franchise. In exchange for Lindros, the Flyers received Jan Hlavac, Kim Johnsson, and Pavel Brendl as well as a 3rd round pick in the 2003 …

Then and Now: Mark Eaton

Mark Eaton may not be remembered by Flyers’ fans for leading the league in points or for being a physical defender, but that doesn’t mean Eaton will be forgotten. Not only is he the lone Delaware-born player to ever play in the NHL, Eaton was also part of the highly despised 2009 Pittsburgh Penguins team that won a Stanley Cup beating the Flyers on the way. Starting out with the Philadelphia Phantoms in 1998-1999 up to the New York Islanders this past year, Eaton has played with seven different professional teams. What has Eaton done since his rookie season in Philly? As an …

Then and Now: Janne Niinimaa

What do Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen, and Janne Niinimaa all have in common? They were all drafted in the 1993 NHL Entry draft. How many were drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers? Only Janne Niinimaa. Pronger went second, to the Hartford Whalers, while Timonen could be considered the hidden gem of the draft going 250nd to the Los Angeles Kings. Well, we know what Pronger and Timonen are doing with their careers now, but what about Niinimaa? Before the aforementioned question is answered, let us remember Niinimaa’s brief time spent in Philly. Spending three seasons with Jokerit in the SM-liiga after …

Then and Now: Dennis Seidenberg

At the time, Bob Clarke’s decision to send 24-year-old defenseman Dennis Seidenberg to Phoenix for the aging Petr Nedved was a questionable move. All the Flyers have left from their trade with the Coyotes on January 20, 2006 is minor leaguer Joonas Lehtivuori. Seidenberg, at the moment, is helping the Bruins try to win their first Stanley Cup since 1970. So just how did the aftermath of this deal transpire? “Nedved has always been a good scorer and a real good player and we think he’ll solve some of our problems up front,” Clarke told the Associated Press after the trade back in …

Then and Now: Patrick Thoresen

A player who will most likely be remembered for an infamous injury in the playoffs, Patrick Thoresen was a respectable 4th liner for the Flyers during the latter part of the 2007-2008 NHL season. In his 35 games in a Flyers’ uniform, Thoresen didn’t register a single goal, but did post seven assists (two in the postseason). However, the success of Thoresen’s game was measured more in defense and sweat rather than goals and assists. Since leaving the Flyers in the 2008 offseason, Thoresen has found his scoring touch in route to a Gagarin Cup. Picked up off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers on …
