Anticipation

Wow. I am watching a hockey game. A Flyers game. Live. On my computer (no cable for this teacher). I might be able to watch the whole game this time. Or I may take Nyquil and crash in a matter of an hour. This will be short because I have been sick and am sick and will probably continue to be sick for a day or more. But we are almost to regular season and it’s about time. Off-season was traumatizing for this newbie. Summer of 2010 was tolerable. I liked, like Simon Gagne, but I wasn’t invested like I …

Christmas is coming…

It’s already infiltrating stores at the mall.  I am not kidding. My nephew is over two years old. I am the doting aunt and he will have the best book collection known to any kid in the free world. Because I’m his aunt. He lives with my brother and sister-in-law in Atlanta, which just lost its hockey team. The chances of him becoming a hockey player in any period of his life is slim, but I’m hopeful. Because I’m his aunt. I already have his Christmas presents bought. 2011 Christmas Present #1 (Photo from Google Images) Hat Tricks Count by …

Pick Your Position

If asked, I admit without reservation that my favorite Flyer is Claude Giroux. The admiration comes from  a huge appreciation for his on-ice ability, “Oh my gosh, did he just pass without looking?” And some seriously amazing stick-handling skills. So I definitely enjoy forwards. Defensemen too. Mez’s shots from the blue line, Pronger’s elbows, and Kimmo’s just awesomeness. But if you asked me what kind of girl I was, I’d say simply, “I’m a goalie girl.” It comes from a couple of things. When I played soccer as a kid in AYSO, I was more often than not, a goalie. …

Defending the Flyers

Well, I did it. Brought hockey into my lesson. Not relatable to Henry V, unfortunately. That would have been amazing. I’m making my 10th and 11th graders learn vocabulary. They hate it, I love it, so it’s a win-win. Our word a few days ago was acrimony, which means bitterness or animosity. In an effort to help them learn, I used it in a sentence, making it up right on the spot. “I have a lot of acrimony when I constantly have to defend why I’m a Flyers fan. To everyone.” (Right, so it’s not the most eloquent of sentences, but …

Rookie

I am a girl and I like hockey. For those of you who grew up in Philadelphia, or perhaps another hockey-centric area, the above statement might not surprise you.  I was told recently that hockey has a very high percentage of female fans in comparison to other professional sports.  It shocked me because, well, I’m from the South and we like our football.  Women and men. So, how in the world did I become a hockey fan, even more, a Philadelphia Flyers fan? ::waves:: Hi.  I’m the newbie on the site, which is pretty apropos because I’m a newbie in …
