Dear Flyers,

I am sick. Which is not your fault by any means. It’s been this way since I started teaching. So I don’t blame you for that. I do blame you for the emotional upheaval I’ve been dealing with this last week. Last Wednesday? Never again. I can’t take that. Don’t forget that I live in non-Flyers country and having to defend you on a daily basis is wearing. When you go and do insane things like Game 4, it makes it even worse. So, finish it tonight, Flyers. Every single fan knows what this team is capable of. We want …

Icehogs and Danny Syvret (Peoria)

A few weeks ago, I finally got myself to an AHL game. Specifically, Rockford Icehogs vs. Peoria Rivermen. For those (like me not so long ago) who don’t know, the Icehogs are the Chicago Blackhawks farm team and the Rivermen are the St. Louis Blues farm team. I invited a friend of mine, who actually grew up watching Rivermen games. Her mother also informed her that to get into the playoffs, the Rivermen had to win this game. I decided to go to this game because of Danny Syvret, who was traded to the Blues/Rivermen last year from the Flyers/Phantoms. …

Review: Goon

I saw Goon this past Saturday when it finally showed up in a theater within driving distance. I went with a hockey friend of mine who plays men’s league, mostly because we’re buds, but also because he knows infinitely more about hockey than I do.  We also saw The Hunger Games afterwards which in retrospect is a really weird combination of movies to see in one day. It’s not Slap Shot. I don’t expect anything will ever replace that film in both humor, hockey and honesty. Deadspin recently did an article on it. Take a look. So if you decide …

Review: 100 Things Flyers Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die

“The Stanley Cup Playoffs are like a two-month tap dance through a minefield.” (Kimelman) By far, my favorite quote out of the book that I finally finished: 100 Things Flyers Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die. The quote is under #21 entitled Suprimeau, which probably unsurprisingly is about Keith Primeau, Flyers captain in 2004. Overall, this is a solid book. Most of the information intrigued me and kept my interest. From the hey days in the 70s, to the 90s and 00s; this book covers an awful lot of history and factoids in what others might consider merely …

Flyers' Giroux celebrates his game winning goal in front of Blackhawks' Niemi during overtime in Game 3 of the NHL Stanley Cup final hockey series in Philadelphia

They’re Coming: Playoffs

Less than a month away, April 11th. The playoffs are coming and there’s nothing we can do to stop them. Would we even want to? Playoff hockey is the best part. Even people I know who aren’t avid hockey people, but enjoy sports, will watch playoff hockey. It’s when urgency and desperation is at its height and some of the most amazing things can happen. The celebration after Mike Richards’ goal against the Montreal Canadiens in the 5th game of the 3rd round in 2010 will forever stick in our minds. It was a moment of awesome greatness. We see …
