European Updates #3

Last week’s update was all about Jaromir and his birthday. This week is a little different. We have some really good topics about a former Flyers goalie who had his issues here, so take a look. First of all, it’s very likely that Petr Nedved’s Liberec (4th) will be facing Jakub Kovar’s Ceske Budejovice (5th) in the playoffs. So Flyers fans should be interested in that matchup. Yes, there are still two games remaining in the regular season but both teams are tied with points (80) and Vitkovice have 6 less points than Budejovice. I was hesitating about this news …

European Updates #2

Petr Nedved still has it. Nedved, the former Flyer and long-time NHLer, scored in a shootout against Sweden and he added another goal against Russia in the last European tournament Oddset Hockey games. Pretty impressive, isn’t it? He turned 40 last December but he’s still valuable to his Czech Extraliga Team – HC Bili Tygri Liberec (HC White Tigers Liberec). Right now he leads, the league in points (56) and assists (34), although he played only 44 games. He is also fourth in goals (22). In his previous season, Nedved racked up 55 points and he ranked third in points …

Jagr speaks (in Czech), but answers not lost in translation

Here’s my latest article, which is a transcript of a CTK interview with Jaromír Jagr, supplemented with his other quotations. On his birthday: “It’s very difficult to celebrate in some way during the season. We have a lot of games and the only advantage is that we’re going to play a lot of games home and I think that reaching a certain age may not really be worth celebrating either. I’m not thinking about marriage. These things happen or they don’t. It’s about the heart, not about the mind. If you’re doing it just because you have it in your …

European Updates: 2.1.12

Hello, everyone! I would like  to introduce you all to my new column. It’s a weekly update on hockey from Europe. It’s not only about (former) Flyers in Europe but also about other news from across the pond. Teemu H does a great job providing updates over at BSH, and this column aims to add some supplemental coverage. Jakub Kovar gets the nod in Czech national team for Oddset Hockey Games along with Tomas Popperle. What does it mean for him? Both Jakub and Tomáš are fighting for the third goalie spot in the World Championship (after Ondrej Pavelec who …

Jaromír Jágr and new Sazka ad

Jaromír Jágr has lots of faces. He turned into Santa Claus one time. Now? I’ll keep this one a secret. Jaromír made another Sazka ad for Czech TV. He rides a scooter through the town. Notice the logo on the back of his scooter. He’s a delivery guy for a fictional company that refers to the Philadelphia Flyers. Two girls answer the doorbell when after rings it and they are surprised to see him. He salutes them and makes a familiar smile. There is a subtitle: “Win in Sportka and do only what you really enjoy”.

Jágr doesn’t make a noise, he’s a good neighbour, praises Vorácek

Despite getting thoroughly beaten by the Boston Bruins, losing Chris Pronger for the rest of the season and Claude Giroux getting concussed, Jakub Vorácek is an optimist. “We’re playing excellent,” claims red-haired Jágr’s buddy. One lost match can’t distract us.“ Boston scored six goals against the Flyers in Philadelphia. That’s not a game that you want to remember. What happened? Did you run out of gas because of the long winning streak? I don’t think so but, if it’s 3-0 after nine minutes and the first goal is deflection from the skate, it’s hard to come back. We weren’t playing that …

Santa Jágr? Christmas ad by #68

It’s Christmas time. And even Jaromír Jágr wants to celebrate this holiday and he could make people happy, especially children. So he became Santa Claus for a while. Here’s his new ad for Sazka TV-spot. Here’s the transcript for the commercial: “We wish for you in the next year that you could do just that what you really enjoy. Sazka. Make your dreams come true.”

Jágr thanks his parents

He has achieved everything in hockey. He won an Olympic Gold medal, World Cup Championship and the Stanley Cup — twice. Jaromír Jágr amazed the whole world with his fantastic performance on every club for which he played. And this is truth even as he approaches his 40th birthday. He fits perfectly to Philadelphia and he’s created very dangerous duo with linemate Claude Giroux. On Thanksgiving Day, which was October 24 this year, he didn’t forget to thank the people who helped him the most to start his brilliant career. Philly.com scheduled an interview with Jaromír and in it, he …

Jágr’s TV spot for Sazka

Jaromír Jágr has been famous in North America. But you can’t imagine how big of a deal is he in the Czech Republic. When Jágr bought his first team in his hometown of Kladno, he wanted to secure them from bankruptcy. HC Kladno had financial issues and there was a chance that they would be forced to sell their Extraliga license to another team from the minor league. (Note: Czech Extraliga isn’t “closed”. Teams can go down and up after each season. It depends on the rank and there’s a best-of-seven series between the lowest team from Extraliga and the highest …

Back to the past: What Jágr said during the summer

I know it’s a long time since Jaromír Jágr signed his contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. But take another look at what he said to the Czech media after joining the team. The following are based on a Czech interview with Jaromir on isport and idnes.cz. There hasn’t been a summer like this before. He signed a new deal with Philly, he makes Pens fans angry and they hate him now. He also became boss of his hometown team in Kladno. He only had a short time to make a preseason workout, so we hope that the comeback to the …
