Welcome to this week’s 3-on-3, where we look back on the week that was for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers won all three games last week to gain 6 points and take over the overall lead in the Eastern Conference from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Let’s look at this week’s 3 “hot” and 3 “not”:  3 ”hot”: Claude Giroux: “G” has continued his stellar play and has taken over the scoring lead in the NHL with 39 points, 3 points ahead of Toronto’s Phil Kessel. 3 on 3 for the week of 12.04.2011

Welcome to this week’s 3-on-3, where we look back at the week that was for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Orange and Black had a mini road trip to the West Coast, winning both games and gathering 4 more points, keeping them in the hunt in the Eastern Conference for a top playoff seed. A few key players made their return to the lineup, but would they return “hot” or “not”? Let’s get to this week’s 3 “hot” Flyers: The Giroux-Jagr-Harnell line — I could have just made them one through three, but I thought they deserved to be together at …

A rash of injuries have hit the Flyers recently, but they are still in second place in the Atlantic Division, 3 points behind Pittsburgh. Let’s get to this week’s “hot” and “cold” Flyers:  3 “hot”: Claude Giroux –”G” continues his Hart Trophy candidacy with another strong week, potting 2 goals and an assist in 4 games. He continues to trail Phil Kessel for the overall scoring lead in …

Point/Counterpoint: Heavyweights are unnecessary in the new NHL

Point/Counterpoint is a new series that argues both sides of a topic relevant to the Philadelphia Flyers. This week, Dain S and Jim discuss whether the heavyweight enforcer is needed in today’s NHL. Point by Dain S: Muhammad Ali. Mike Tyson. Those names inspire awe and conjure up images of the “baddest man on the planet,” the heavyweight champion. In hockey, the heavyweight enforcer has also been a fixture of the NHL since the 70’s when the Flyers constructed a team filled with tough guys and skill players, changing the game forever while winning consecutive Stanley Cups. However, in today’s NHL, the …

Let’s see who were this week’s “hot” and “not” Flyers: 3 “Hot”: Matt Read – The young rookie from Bemidji State University continues to position himself as a rookie of the year candidate. Welcome to 3-on-3 , where we look back on the past week of Flyers games and break down the numbers to see who is hot and who could be playing better. 3 on 3 for the week of 11.06.11

Welcome to 3-on-3, where we take a look back at the best and worst Flyers of the last week, statistically speaking. The Flyers had a good week, going 2-0-1 and gaining 5 out of a 6 possible points with a tough road victory against the Sabres,  a disappointing shootout loss to the rival Devils, and a complete manhandling of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Here are this week’s 3 “hot” and 3 “duds:” “Hot” players: Sean Couturier — The 18-year-old from the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the QMJHL continues his strong two way play in his rookie season. “Couts” as he is …

3 on 3 for the week of 10.30.2011

Welcome to this week’s 3-on-3. This week, I will be adding Corsi to my weekly stat analysis. Corsi is a stat that measures shots for and against while a player is on the ice, so the theory is the higher the Corsi, the more effective the player is and the more value he has to his team. The Flyers had an up and down week, defeating Toronto 4-2 on Monday, then dropping back-to-back contests, 5-1 in Montreal on Wednesday and a 9-8 scorefest with Winnipeg on Thursday. The Orange and Black then rebounded with a solid victory Saturday against Carolina by a 5-1 …

3 on 3 for the week of 10.23.2011

The Flyers started off the week well, with a win in Ottawa 7-2, but followed it up with two straight losses, a 5-2 setback to the Caps and a 4-2 decision to the Blues — both at home. The Flyers need to play better if they want to turn around this current losing streak. That being said, it is time for this week’s three stars: Matt Read — Read had a career-best goal and three assists in the thrashing of the Sens and has continued his solid all around play at both ends of the ice. He was held scoreless …

3 on 3 for the week of 10.16.2001

The Flyers had a good week, winning 5-4 over Vancouver and getting 1 point in a 3-2 OT loss to the LA Kings. That gives them 7 points, good enough for 4th place in the Eastern Conference.  Here are  my 3 “hot” players for last week:  Claude Giroux — Giroux moves to the #1 slot this week with 1 goal and 2 assists in 2 games. He continues to look very good on the power play with Jagr, and they have a special chemistry that is hard to describe. They just seem to know where each other are on the ice at …
