Here are some thoughts on how it went: [CSN Philly] [Philly.com] [Hockeybuzz] The end is nigh… Or how I learned to stop worrying about a lockout. The owners opening salvo is a bucket of crazy covered in madness. [CSN Philly] Defensive defenseman? Not Mike Green. The Caps decide to overpay their oft-injured blueliner way more than they should. Zach Parise and Ryan Suter were two of the marquee free agents in the NHL this offseason. Many of the top teams in the league tried to sign them, including the Red Wings, Penguins, Wild and of course the Flyers.  Minnesota ended up …

Flyers draft Valeri Vasiliev

This is the only photo I could find of Flyer draft pick defenseman Valeri Vasiliev. There was another Valeri Vasiliev,a legendary defenseman from the 70′s and 80′s but he passed recently. The 18-year-old defenseman already has a man’s body and is regarded as a physical force by scouts. Quality skater with average offensive instincts but makes very good decisions and plays a basic game. Vasiliev should be worth a Top 100 pick, but …

Flyers draft defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere

With the 78th pick overall, the Flyers select young defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere from Union College. [Union College] [Youtube] From Dustin Leed: Gostisbehere had 5 goals and 17 assists in 44 games this year on a good Union team. Played with Braydon Coburn’s little brother. Gostisbehere is 5′ 11″, 16o lbs,but is only 19 years old,so he should continue filling out his frame as he matures. Highlights from Union vs. Merrimack: skip ahead to 2:50 for Gostisbehere’s goal: [Youtube] From Corey Pronman: Gostisbehere to PHI. Great hockey sense/vision with offensive skill. Not talked about a lot, but a good player. The consensus seems …
