There are some great rivalries in sports, past and present. In football, you have the NFC East consisting of the Eagles, Giants, Redskins, and Cowboys. In baseball, there is the timeless rivalry of Yankees and Red Sox and new age rivalries like the Phillies and Nationals. Basketball had the great Knicks/Heat battles of the late 90’s or the Sixers/Celtics and Lakers/Celtics games throughout history. One of the greatest rivalries is, no doubt, Duke vs. North Carolina in college basketball. But there is one rivalry that presently stands above them all: The Philadelphia Flyers vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins. Thursday night featured …

Flyers Outlast Sens In Goalie Duel

Wayne Simmonds scored on a beautiful goal in the second period, beating Ottawa goaltender Ben Bishop between the pads to give the Flyers a two-goal lead in an eventual 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon. Simmonds started the play in his own end, gave an outlet pass to Danny Briere, who dropped it off for Brayden Schenn, who fed a cross-ice pass to Simmonds who went forehand, backhand, and eventually five-hole to beat Bishop. Also scoring for the Flyers was Jakub Voracek, notching his co-team leading ninth goal. Ilya Bryzgalov was stellar again for the Flyers, stopping 33-of-34 shots. The Flyers …

A hero returns, and a fond farewell

I feel like it was pretty obvious what I would be writing about this week. One of my all-time favorite Flyers (and your most loved Flyer) returned to Philadelphia to once again don the Orange and Black sweater. That man, of course, is #12, Simon Gagne. My love goes back to my years in high school. I recall reading about Gagne and how he would be the “next superstar” in Philadelphia. Although Gagne never gained “superstar status,” he was a star in the NHL. At just 33 years of age, Gagne – barring health issues – can continue to be …

Flyers Beat Capitals In Gagne’s Return

Claude Giroux led the way, scoring a goal and an assist, and Simon Gagne lit the lamp in his return to Philadelphia, as the Flyers defeated the Washington Capitals 4-1. The Orange and Black improved to 10-11-1 on the season and 2-2-0 on their current home stand. Scoring along with Giroux were Wayne Simmonds and Max Talbot, while goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov made his 20th start of the season and earned the win after saving 22-of-23 shots. Wayne Simmonds capped a furious comeback for the Flyers scoring at 11:03 remaining in the third period to give the Flyers a 4-3 lead and a 5-3 victory. Simmonds received a cross-ice pass just in front of the goalmouth from Brayden Schenn, and all Simmonds had to was tap in the game-winner. “It is what it is.” The comment made by Flyers coach Peter Laviolette after Thursday night’s 5-2 loss to the Florida Panthers says everything I need to know about this Flyers team. But what do we know about the 2013 Philadelphia Flyers? Are they resilient? Coming back from down 2-0 in Pittsburgh, I’d say that, yes, these Flyers are resilient. Are they disciplined? Flyers send Hurricanes home with another Saturday loss

Danny Briere scored his second goal of the season at 1:47 of overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers sent Carolina Hurricanes home with a loss for the second straight Saturday, winning 4-3. Briere took an outlet pass from Nicklas Grossmann along the boards, crossed up the defense, and sent a wrist shot, which deflected off the far post and then off the backside of ‘Canes goalie Cam Ward and over the goal line. Flyers weather the storm, beat Hurricanes 5-3

For the first time in three opportunities in this slow start to the 2013 season, the Philadelphia Flyers were able to win the second part of back-to-back games. After a disheartening 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals last night, the Flyers were able to bounce back against the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday night, winning 5-3. Kurtis Foster, Braydon Coburn and Danny Briere all collected their first goals of the season in the first period, and Ilya Bryzgalov proved himself once again, making a season-high 39 saves. Joni Pitkanen, Eric Staal and Patrick Dwyer scored for the Hurricanes, who couldn’t maintain momentum …

Future Looks Bright For Scott Laughton

Scott Laughton is not the fastest, nor is he the biggest (6’1, 177 pounds) or the oldest (just 18 years old). He is not the most talented. But, what Scott Laughton did during his five-game trial with the Philadelphia Flyers proved that he could play at the NHL level. During Laughton’s brief stint with the Flyers, he registered zero goals, zero assists, and obviously, zero points. He averaged 11:31 a game, and that time is just not enough to develop a player with his style. I agree with the Flyers’ decision to send Laughton back to Oshawa to play with …

Claude Giroux has officially been promoted. The fifth-year pro and Hart Trophy hopeful was named the 19th captain in Philadelphia Flyers history (and 18th man to hold the post) on Tuesday.
