RICE & MICE: Black and blue….kidneys?

Braydon Coburn missed last Monday night’s game with a bruised kidney and was back in action just a couple days later on Wednesday. Even so, bruised kidneys aren’t to be taken lightly. The kidneys are vital to the body because they are responsible for filtering toxins out of the blood and by ridding the body of these toxins and excess fluid and salts by producing urine. Blood flows into them via a renal artery, is filtered by vessels in the kidney and leaves “clean” via a renal vein. The urine that is produced by the filtering leaves the kidney through …

RICE & MICE: My thoughts on the NHL and player safety

I was listening to Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio on the way to work as I always do and were some very good points made a couple of weeks ago, both by Cris Carter and Mark Schlereth about player safety in NFL that I think cross over and may be applied to the NHL as well. Effort should be made by training staff and coaching staff to protect the players from themselves. We all know most players will try to shake it off and continue to play, but if a player looks a bit unsteady after …

Point/Counterpoint: The 1-3-1

Point/Counterpoint is a new series which argues both sides of a topic relevant to the Philadelphia Flyers. This week, Pavialax and Dan A debate whether or not Tampa’s 1-3-1 is good for the sport of hockey. Point by Pavialax: I somehow missed the memo that says I should be outraged by Tampa’s audacity in playing the 1-3-1 system. Amidst the fallout from last week was discussion of how to prevent teams from playing the trap or at least preventing a standoff situation like we saw multiple times in the game. It seems most of the backlash is directed toward the trap itself, with …

RICE & MICE: Yo! It’s Movember!

Ah, Movember, how I missed you! As promised, I am featuring this amazing mustache movement that raises money and awareness for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and other cancers that affect men. Goalies Jonas Hiller and Tim Thomas are not only sporting their own ‘staches for the month, but also Movember Masks which I believe will be auctioned off at the end of the month. Hiller’s mask is awesome, by the way, and I love that it includes all of his teammates in the design. Movember has had the support of NHL players for the past …

RICE & MICE: November is national diabetes month

In case you were wondering, November is national diabetes month and the blue circle is an international symbol for world diabetes day on November 14 – so if you happen to see a blue circle, chances are it is tied in some way to diabetes awareness. People also may be wearing blue on Fridays to support the cause. Yes, I know it’s also Movember and I’ll get to that in another piece, but today I’m discussing diabetes. More specifically, I’m talking about Type 1 diabetes (commonly referred to as juvenile diabetes, insulin dependent diabetes, or my personal favorite: the sugar) and what …
