Five Questions: Diamonds in the rough

Flyers Faithful revisited a former recurring feature, Five Questions, to address some current hot and important topics, including the draft, prospects, and the future of the Flyers. For this edition of Five Questions, we asked John Saquella, Jim Butler, James Centifonti, Joshua Janet, and our very own Jared Abbott to participate. Below, you will find their answers to today’s question. Tye McGinn has been a pleasant surprise this season, as Matt Read was last year. Which of the current Flyers prospects do you think could make the leap and become the next dark horse NHLer? John Saquella: I like Taylor Leier …

Five Questions: The next head coach

Flyers Faithful revisited a former recurring feature, Five Questions, to address some current hot and important topics, including the draft, prospects, and the future of the Flyers. For this edition of Five Questions, we asked John Saquella, James Centifonti, Jim Butler, Joshua Janet, and our very own Jared Abbott to participate. Below, you will find their answers to today’s question. Assuming that Peter Laviolette does not return behind the bench next season, who would be your (realistic) top three picks to coach the Flyers?  John Saquella: I have long been calling for a change behind the bench, and my first choice was …

Rest in peace, Captain. You were a true hero.

Ice hockey fundraiser to benefit the family of Michael Goodwin

At the suggestion of Scott Valletti, we are raising money to benefit the family of fallen Philadelphia fire fighter, Captain Michael Goodwin, who tragically lost his life this weekend. Here’s the deal. We have a game date setup for Sunday, April 21. Since it is a tight deadline, we’re going all in here. If we can get enough registrants (30 skaters, 2 goalies)*, we will play. If not, your money will go straight to Goodwin’s family and we will send you a thank you package on behalf of Flyers Faithful. Here are the details: What: One-game, two-team Ice hockey fundraiser to …

Five Questions: Sleeper picks

Flyers Faithful revisited a former recurring feature, Five Questions, to address some current hot and important topics, including the draft, prospects, and the future of the Flyers. For this edition of Five Questions, we asked John Saquella, Jim Butler, James Centifonti, Joshua Janet, and our very own Jared Abbott to participate. Below, you will find their answers to today’s question. There is a lot of talk about the depth of this year’s draft class, specifically in the first round. What player or players do you see as sleeper picks that Flyers should target in later rounds? John Saquella: I like Juuso …

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Looking forward: Who goes?

Prior to curating your opinions last week, I ran down a list of the players that the Flyers should keep heading into next season. This week, I will take a different approach, stating not what should happen but what may actually happen. Throughout yesterday’s trade deadline, the team remained relatively quiet, surfacing only to claim Adam Hall off of waivers to fill Max Talbot’s spot and to swap backup goalies. The front office openly acknowledges there are many holes to fill but the restraint shown today is an indicator that Paul Holmgren is not going to overpay for players just for the sake of …

A collection of your opinions

In recent days, I have had some very insightful hockey conversations with people and have read many others online as well. I would like to share some of those thoughts and include a few of my own here. Paul Holmgren has been a successful general manager in many ways but his biggest failure has been assembling solid clubs at the AHL and ECHL levels. In order to develop good prospects, the Flyers need good affiliate teams. Good prospects are less likely to reach their potential without a solid supporting cast. Take the Columbus Blue Jackets, for example. Granted, CBJ is …

Oh my God, we're not having a fire... sale (yet)!

Looking forward: Who stays?

Planning for next season. It’s the phrase you have heard in recent days and will continue to hear after each excruciating loss and lackluster performance. It is a way of saying that season is beyond repair and that the organization will make no knee-jerk moves or hasty decisions. Take, for instance, Peter Laviolette. Whether he is a fall guy or responsible for the poor play of the team is irrelevant at this point. As Chris Therien said on the radio last night, “Each coach has an expiration date. You get hired to get fired.” It’s an inevitability, a foregone conclusion. Lavy is merely …
