What’s wrong with the Flyers?

It’s too easy to blame Brian Boucher for this loss. After all, he gave up four goals on 20 shots and was pulled from the game. Regrettably, he has not performed above his abilities during the playoffs this season. He’s let in some soft goals and been pulled more times than a sixteen-year old’s wang. His .800 SV% tonight was also woeful at best, but let’s not hang him out to dry just yet. Bill Meltzer likes to state that bad things happen when you don’t move your feet. The Flyers skaters are providing him with plenty of evidence to …

2011 second round predictions

Penaltykiller EASTERN CONFERENCE Washington Capitals vs. Tampa Bay Lightning In the regular season Tampa boasted the better offense and powerplay while Washington had the better goals against and save percentage. Although I think the gap is closer since Tampa acquired Roloson.  Both have good penalty kill units, but Tampa has the powerplay advantage. Tampa also had the advantage in shot differential while Washington had the season series. I am going with Washington because they have enough firepower that could explode at any time and their defense and experience give them a bit of advantage. Washington in six. Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston …

I stole this image from Broad Street Hockey because I felt it deserved to be part of a caption contest. So, take your best shot. Comment below with your caption. I’ll go first and get the easy joke out of the way: “So, what does it mean again when I do this with my arms?”

So, it’s come to this

Tonight, Mike Richards felt obliged to apologize on Twitter for a hat he may or may not wear in the future. He said: Ok so today I was given a lot of nice hats from New Era. 3 phillies hats to go along with the other 3 I have but also some other teams. Apologize in advance for wearing the hats. I just like how they fit Richards, captain of the Flyers and a hockey hero in Philadelphia, had to feel uncomfortable about the prospect of wearing one of these hats if it moved him to publicly apologize in advance …

How did Zherdev play tonight?

Nikolay Zherdev saw his first postseason action as a Flyers tonight. He scored the game-winning goal and was named the first star of the game. He also only saw 8:14 of ice time. How do you think he played?

Boucher to start, Leighton to backup tonight

Sergei Bobrovsky fared poorly in his last start against the Buffalo Sabres, giving up three quick goals in seven shots. He looked shaky and unconfident. Bill Meltzer put it best when he said it was like Bob realized the enormity that is the postseason, and not in a good way. Still, he’s been known to bounce back from bad outings and is a better goalie on the road (.920 SV%, 2.51 GAA). After he was pulled from game 2, it was reasonable to think that he had a chance at starting the next game. Not so. This morning, Dave Isaac …

Can Zherdev be this year’s Leino?

Snubbed by coach Pater Laviolette, Nikolay Zherdev found himself sitting as a healthy scratch for game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against the Buffalo Sabres. Laviolette apparently wants more defense from his team and the Ukranian winger is, well, not exactly known for his backchecking prowess. However, Zherdev, who cannot escape the “enigmatic” tag, does have a few things going for him. He is a supremely talented scorer who can be just as dazzling as he is frustrating to watch. In short stretches, he can perform at peak levels, like he did during the preseason (6 points in 6 games) …

The good, the bearded, and the fundraisers

You like the Flyers, right? Of course you do. That’s why you’re here. I bet you’re a good person too. As a fan of the Flyers, giving has become second nature to you. It’s inevitable, given all of the countless charities run through the organization. This year’s Flyers Wives Fight For Lives Carnival may already be a distant memory but the giving season is far from over. Now is the time to dig deep to help the Flyers and Dancin’ Shawny raise money for Flyers Charities through Beard-A-Thon. So, what is Beard-A-Thon? Let’s get that info straight from the source. …
