Modest proposals for the next CBA

As National Hockey League owners and the NHLPA work towards creating a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, some wonder if the two sides will find a middle ground before the league enters its third lockout in 18 years. While this author would never claim to be a CBA expert and fully admits that countless others are more well versed on the matter, he would still like to provide some suggestions. In the most recent iterations of the NFL and NBA’s CBA, the two leagues adopted a 10-year model. The CBA for these two leagues will expire in 2021. The NHL would …

Frick

Somber, grateful

In 2010, when I decided to join the hockey blogging community, I had one specific purpose in mind. I had no interest in becoming an “insider” (I’m not), nor did I care about making money (I lose money), nor did I think my opinion was more insightful or appealing than that of any other blogger (it’s not). Flyers re-sign Voracek

The Philadelphia Flyers finally made it official on Thursday afternoon, revealing that winger and restricted free agent Jakub Voracek was signed to a multi-year contract extension. The 22-year-old from Kladno recorded a career high 18 goals to go with 31 assists in 78 games during his first season with the Orange and Black. He added two goals — including an overtime winner in Game 1 of the Eastern Quarterfinals in Pittsburgh and eight helpers in …

Point/Counterpoint: The merits of a salary cap floor

Welcome to another edition of Point/Counterpoint, where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes square off, debating an issue with their own unique style and flair. This week, Kim Q and our own Fearless Leader Marcello D take on the issue of the salary cap floor. Point: The cap floor has kept its promise of parity by Kim Q At first thought, the salary floor is the yin to the yang of the salary cap. The salary cap serves an important purpose in leveling the playing field for some of the lower revenue teams and keep the higher revenue teams spending in …

Playoff Beard

As the world turns

Each of the 30 teams in the NHL shares one common goal: winning the Stanley Cup. Yet no two teams take the same route to the Cup. There are just too many variables involved. If it was as simple as following the plan that brought the reigning champ to victory, every team would inevitably go the same route but the fact of the matter is that it is not the case. Teams are restricted by any number of factors, including the salary cap, funds available, and/or the ability the draft and develop talent. In the case of a big market …
