On a lockout, the offseason, and more

After the Minnesota Wild signed both Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, a trend became apparent: small-market teams were spending big money while traditional big spenders remained relatively quiet. At first, this seemed to be because teams like the Flyers and Rangers were not only making big bids for the aforementioned All-Stars but were also tied up in trade talks for Rick Nash and Bobby Ryan. Now that the Collective Bargaining Agreement talks are underway, one has to wonder if the owners of big-market teams kept GMs on a short leash to see how the negotiations played out. Last offseason, many …

Kicking back at Trial on the Isle

What do the Philadelphia Flyers and the Jersey Shore have in common? Nothing really, at least for 364 days out of any given year. On Wednesday afternoon, the Flyers organization took time out from breaking in the new prospect crop to hit the sun, sand, surf and base paths during the 12th annual Trial on the Isle in Stone Harbor, New Jersey. Though our Fearless Leader posted this baby with pics I took, it’s your old pal Bob H reporting, taking a badly-needed day away from the office. Begun at the suggestion of then-players Rick Tocchet and Mark Recchi back …

Michael F'in' Leighton

Flyers re-sign Leighton

The Flyers have made it official, re-signing goaltender Michael Leighton to back up Ilya Bryzgalov on Sunday afternoon. The deal is for one year, $900k. This should sum up both the contract and the reactions to it: Leighton has exactly one game of NHL experience since Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, an unsteady 7-4 victory in Los Angeles on December 30, 2010. “I’m very happy to be back in Philly,” Leighton said upon the announcement. “This is where I want to be and I’m excited about the team we have this year. I look forward to the …

Lost in translation: What that offseason news really means

The offseason is filled with plenty of news, speculation, absurd rumors, and hyperbole. So, we at Flyers Faithful have decided to take our best shot at deciphering some of the things that you’ve heard recently. News: This was a great pick by the Flyers! He’s an absolute steal with a lot of upside and projects to be a Mike Richards-type player. What it sounds like: Holy crap, we traded Mike Richards for Mike Richards last year and drafted another Mike Richards this year! What it really means: The kid plays two-way hockey and probably scored a nice shorthanded goal when he was fifteen …

Reece Willcox

Flyers draft Reece Willcox

With the 141st pick in the 2012 NHL Entry draft, the Philadelphia Flyers select Reece Willcox of the Merritt Centennials of the BCHL. The 6’2″, 185lb. right-handed defenseman posted 37 points in 105 total games in the BCHL.

This is one of a billion people named Fredrik Larsson, who is not Fredric Larsson

Flyers draft Fredric Larsson

With the 111th pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the Flyers select Fredric Larsson from the Swedish Junior Hockey League. The 17-year-old is a 6’3″ (or he is 18-years old and 6’1″, depending on the source) left-handed defenseman who appears to be a defensive-minded blue liner as well as rough player. In 19 games for Brynäs J18, he accumulated a whopping 109 penalty minutes and was a +25. Larsson is considered to be a sleeper pick in this year’s draft. Via USA Today: Larsson came out of nowhere late in the season and was terrific in Sweden’s junior under-20 playoffs for Brynas, …

Anthony Stolarz

Flyers draft goalie Anthony Stolarz

With the 45th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the Flyers select goaltender, Anthony Stolarz, from Corpus Christi IceRays of the NAHL. The Flyers passed over Tomas Hyka, a player the team was unable to sign last season due to draft eligibility, and Dalton Thrower, a player pegged as a typical Flyer, to select Stolarz. Stolarz was ranked tenth among goalies by ISS and fourth among American goalies by Central Scouting. Much like Niko Hoivenen, Stolarz is a big goalie who stands at 6’5″ and 200lbs. He posted a 2.84 GAA and a .920 SV% with three shutouts …
