Penn State edges Sacred Heart; Set to face a tough UMass-Lowell squad

Ricky DeRosa’s and Luke Juha’s first period goals proved to be the difference as Penn State narrowly escaped with a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart last Friday. With the win Penn State improved to 3-3-1 on the season. Juha, who hails from Mississauga, Ontario, tallied his third power play goal of the season and extended his point streak to three games. DeRosa and Tommy Olczyk also extended their point streaks to three games last Friday. The Lions went 1-7 on the power play, while Sacred Heart went 1-8 with the man advantage. Matt Skoff continued his impressive play as he …

The Guelph Storm keep on rolling; St. Cloud State rises in NCAA rankings; Trouble brewing in Lethbridge?

Right now, it’s a toss-up between the Guelph Storm and the Oshawa Generals for the best team in the OHL. As of today, I would give the slight edge to the Storm who are currently on an impressive 10-game winning streak. When the season started many pundits, including myself, thought the London Knights would run away with the Mid-West Division. Well, London hasn’t exactly set the world on fire and some guy named Connor McDavid is playing lights out hockey for the Erie Otters. But nobody talked about Guelph who are 15-3 on the year. The Storm are routinely scoring …

Penn State gets back into the win column; Prepare for Sacred Heart Friday

The Penn State Nittany Lions snapped their four-game losing streak Friday with a 5-4 victory over the Robert Morris Colonials. This game is just what the doctored ordered for the Nittany Lions. It was not their best game of season by far, but any win is sufficient for Guy Gadowsky and his players. Penn State still took way too many penalties as they committed eight penalties for a total of 24 minutes. However, Robert Morris showed no discipline and Penn State burned them for three power play goals, including a goal by Casey Bailey who finally got his first marker of …

College hockey is thriving in Rhode Island ; Jordon Cooke has been stellar for Kelowna

When most people think of college hockey in New England they automatically think of Boston College, Boston University, Maine and Vermont among others. However, the Ocean State this year has two quality college teams playing at a high level. The Providence College Friars are the No.3 team in the country, after an overtime win and tie over then No.3 Miami of Ohio Red Hawks. Providence is 4-0-1 on the year. Just across town, the Brown University Bears are enjoying early success this season. The Bears are 2-0 on the year as they defeated the defending national champion Yale Bulldogs 4-1, …

Penn State’s struggles continue; Travel to Pittsburgh Friday to take on Robert Morris

Discipline and hard work. They are two qualities that Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky wants to see in his team. Over the last coupled of years, I’ve had to pleasure of getting to know coach pretty well and after Saturday’s night’s 5-2 loss to Vermont in the Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff, I’ve never seen the man so upset and frustrated with his team. The Nittany Lions started out well scoring the game’s first two goals, but after being out-shot 12-1 in the second period, Penn State never fully recovered. I knew Penn State would struggle with a speedier and …
