College Hockey Roundup: Frozen Four Preview and Predictions; Whitehead ousted at Maine

This week I’m taking a look at each match up and make my prediction for each. (Full disclosure I had two of the Frozen Four teams in my original predictions here. UMass-Lowell and St. Cloud State).  For any of the four teams involved in the tournament, a win on Saturday night would clinch a first ever-national championship. Yale is the only team ever to advance this far and that was back in 1952. This tournament marks the first time the national semifinals do not feature at least one of Boston College, Boston University, Denver, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota or Wisconsin. No. 3 …

4-1 loss to Islanders puts Flyers further out of playoff picture

The Philadelphia Flyers lost one of the biggest games in their season tonight at the Nassau Coliseum with a 4-1 defeat to the New York Islanders. Matt Moulson and John Tavares both had a goal and an assist in the win for the Isles, while Brad Boyes and Colin McDonald both recorded two-assist nights. Evgeni Nabokov registered the victory with 26 saves on 27 shots against. Steve Mason was in net tonight for the Flyers and played better than his 28 saves on 31 shots would imply. With a few crucial saves in the second and third periods, Mason’s only flaw …

Harry Z Fight Club

His Name Was Harry Z

On April 1, 2013 the Flyers traded away Harry Zolnierczyk. The members of the Flyers have been trained to lose all identity so they could dissolve into one cohesive orange and black unit. They were trained to live for the crest on the front, not the name on the back. When one of them was moved from the team, the players didn’t understand it. Zac Rinaldo looked up, tears in his eyes. He understood the situation less than anyone. “Why did Flyer 37 have to leave? What does it all mean?” Looking around the room, Kimmo Timonen asked,  “Are you …

Flyers ink Mason to extension

As expected, the Flyers have re-upped goaltender Steve Mason. The club revealed on Monday morning that it’s a one-year extension worth a reported $1.5 million. Mason came over from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a trade deadline deal last Wednesday for Michael Leighton and a third-round draft pick in 2015, and made his Philly debut in the third period of a 4-1 loss at Winnipeg on Saturday. The 24-year-old is due $3.2 million this season and was scheduled to become a restricted free agent in July. Cap-friendly deal? Yep. Primed for controversy? Also yes. Mason, a fallen Calder Trophy winner, …

Evander Kane and Bryan Little each had a goal and an assist, while Blake Wheeler registered two assists in a four-goal second period for the Jets. Ruslan Fedotenko was the lone Flyer to beat Ondrej Pavelec, as the goaltender made 30 saves for the win. Ilya Bryzgalov made 12 saves on 16 shots against before being pulled after the conclusion of the second period. The goaltender didn’t receive too much help in terms of his defenseman clearing out rebounds in front …
