“It Is What It Is” – The State of the Flyers

“It is what it is.” The comment made by Flyers coach Peter Laviolette after Thursday night’s 5-2 loss to the Florida Panthers says everything I need to know about this Flyers team. But what do we know about the 2013 Philadelphia Flyers? Are they resilient? Coming back from down 2-0 in Pittsburgh, I’d say that, yes, these Flyers are resilient. Are they disciplined? No. The Flyers are leading the NHL in penalties with 120. Will they give games away? After last night’s debacle of a game versus the Florida Panthers, the obvious answer is yes. But this is also a …

Sunday funday: Who wants to play Armchair GM?

I do, of course. I mean, who doesn’t? Any dedicated fan is going to have input on how to improve his/her favorite team. It goes without saying, though, that any Armchair GM is merely expressing an opinion. Nothing more, nothing less. And what better way to end a long week than by doing just that? When it comes to the makeup of the roster that comprises the current Philadelphia Flyers team, two things need to be taken into consideration: Not unlike the basement-dwelling 2007 Flyers, this team has a solid core of promising young stars that are starting to realize …

What did Matt Carle ever do to you?

Boo… Who?

Booing is a huge part of sports, right up there with cheering. You cheer for the players and the plays you love, and you boo for everything you hate. The refs, the calls, the players on the opposing team, all of the things you disagree with. It comes with the territory of being a sports fan. But as I took in the Flyers/Lightning game this past Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Center, I found myself wondering why Flyers fans booed Matt Carle — not only when he first took the ice, but a few times throughout the game when he …

When should we be concerned about Brayden Schenn?

<press panic button> I’m already preparing myself for the barrage of comments along the lines of “it’s way too early to come to that conclusion about a not even 22 year old, three games into his second season”. There is plenty of validity in that statement. I think a doubter might combat that with the idea that that is what a homer would say. It’s easy to dismiss mediocre or even poor play by playing the “young” card. During the Devils game, Ryan Bright tweeted the following, which sparked the question in my own head: At what point do the …

Estebombs: Flyers Flight Night

Talkin’ ‘bout practice I went to the Flyers open practice on Thursday and it was an odd experience. 15,000+ people showed up at the Wells Fargo Center for PRACTICE (not a game). I’m not sure what I expected going in, perhaps Scott Hartnell’s version of Cirque du Soleil? A magic show from Jody Shelley? But no, it was actually just cut and dry practice. Shooting drills, odd man rushes, all of that jazz. Per Captain Claude himself: “It’s a little weird, they’re kind of there and you’re waiting for an answer from a teammate or something and you’ve got to …
