Phantoms-Falcons game suspended due to scary incident

On Sunday, Adirondack Phantoms defenseman Brandon Manning was party to something no player wishes will ever happen, even in the heat of battle, not to himself, a teammate, nor a member of the opposition. Manning and Falcons’ Wade MacLeod collided with 3:42 remaining in the second period of a game in Springfield, MA, one in which the Phantoms led by a 2-1 score. The force of the hit dropped MacLeod to the ice, and the 26-year-old winger suffered a seizure as a result of the impact, though not until he was skating back to the bench. He was carted off …

Timonen to come back for one more year

There have been rumblings, which finally came true. The steadiest defenseman to patrol the Philadelphia Flyers blueline since Eric Desjardins has decided to return for one more season. Kimmo Timonen will be back in Orange and Black in 2013-14, thanks to a one-year deal worth $6,000,000. Eklund was first with the news, citing an undisclosed teammate on Wednesday night who hinted that the 37-year-old Finn was going to re-up. Timonen has contributed 28 goals and 211 points over 327 regular-season games since coming over in a July, 2007 deal, and has soldiered through a number of injuries as he has …

Sim returns to Phantoms on PTO

A key component to the Phantoms’ last Calder Cup triumph returned to the organization on Thursday. Jon Sim, a journeyman player who has skated at multiple levels both in and out of North America, was signed to a professional tryout contract (PTO) by the Adirondack Phantoms. “I was in touch with (Paul) Holmgren through my agent. I was on a PTO with San Antonio and things were going good, they wanted to keep me, but the opportunity to come up here and to play in this organization…again…was a great opportunity for me.” Sim was released from a similar deal with …

Heeter feels the heat with two-game ban

Better late than never. While most of us were hyperventilating over what a second meeting between the Flyers and New York Rangers would entail, the ECHL gave Trenton goaltender Cal Heeter a two-game suspension for his puck-firing stunt over the weekend. If you recall, Heeter, recently sent down from the Phantoms to the Titans, was so upset with giving up a goal to Wheeling on Saturday night, that he cleared the puck over the glass and into the stands in frustration. He was given a game misconduct, suspended indefinitely on Sunday and fined an undisclosed amount pending a review, which …

Flyers return Laughton to Ontario Hockey League

On Sunday the Flyers returned 2012 first round draft pick Scott Laughton to the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League. With the lockout-shortened season, Laughton was allowed to play in five NHL games before it would officially signal the start of his entry-level contract (ELC). By returning him to Juniors before his sixth game, the Flyers effectively extend his ELC one year, and delay Laughton’s eligibility for restricted free agency. When faced with the same situation last year, albeit allowing 10 games instead of 5, the Flyers opted to keep the, then, 18 year old Sean Couturier. However, in …
