Candle snuffed: White gets five games for Huskins elbow

The National Hockey League dished out a five-game suspension to Montreal Canadiens forward Ryan White on Wednesday afternoon, for an illegal check to the head of Philadelphia defenseman Kent Huskins. The incident occurred 6:11 into the first period of Monday’s 7-3 Philadelphia victory, when White reached out and used his elbow to subdue Huskins instead of using bodily contact. Huskins suffered a concussion on the play, and is out indefinitely. White was assessed a match penalty and game misconduct. He will forfeit $18,581.10, which automatically goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund, and not be eligible to return until …

After a National Hockey League career that included 234 games played, former Flyers goaltender Antero Niittymaki officially retired from the sport on Friday. Niittymaki played seven seasons in the NHL including his first five (2003-04; 2005-09) in Philadelphia. He retired with a record of 95-86-31, five shutouts, a save percentage of .902 and a goals-against average of 2.95. The 32-year-old goalie was plucked in the 1998 draft by Philadelphia in the sixth round (168th overall). The Season of Wither for the Flyers defense corps continues, with the revelation that Nicklas Grossmann will miss an additional 2-to-3 weeks with a concussion. The news is not new, nor has it been released by the club officially, but multiple reports have stated the case along with the updated timetable on Wednesday. As expected, the Flyers have re-upped goaltender Steve Mason. The club revealed on Monday morning that it’s a one-year extension worth a reported $1.5 million. Mason came over from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a trade deadline deal last Wednesday for Michael Leighton and a third-round draft pick in 2015, and made his Philly debut in the third period of a 4-1 loss at Winnipeg on Saturday.
