Candle snuffed: White gets five games for Huskins elbow

The National Hockey League dished out a five-game suspension to Montreal Canadiens forward Ryan White on Wednesday afternoon, for an illegal check to the head of Philadelphia defenseman Kent Huskins. The incident occurred 6:11 into the first period of Monday’s 7-3 Philadelphia victory, when White reached out and used his elbow to subdue Huskins instead of using bodily contact. Huskins suffered a concussion on the play, and is out indefinitely. White was assessed a match penalty and game misconduct. He will forfeit $18,581.10, which automatically goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund, and  not be eligible to return until …

With injuries to the Flyers defensive corps, that process is sped up a bit, as the club announced on Tuesday afternoon that they recalled defensemen Brandon Manning and Matt Konan from the Adirondack Phantoms. Konan was signed to an entry-level contract last April after spending five seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League in Canadian juniors. A Flyers insider first reported the news this morning. It’s a bit of a whirlwind for the youngster, who on Monday was given a five-game suspension by the Ontario Hockey League for an illegal hit while playing for the Oshawa Generals. Grossmann out 2-3 weeks with concussion

The Season of Wither for the Flyers defense corps continues, with the revelation that Nicklas Grossmann will miss an additional 2-to-3 weeks with a concussion. The news is not new, nor has it been released by the club officially, but multiple reports have stated the case along with the updated timetable on Wednesday. Grossmann has been out since March 18 — a 4-2 road loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning — with what has been called an upper-body injury. As expected, the Flyers have re-upped goaltender Steve Mason. The club revealed on Monday morning that it’s a one-year extension worth a reported $1.5 million. The 24-year-old is due $3.2 million this season and was scheduled to become a restricted free agent in July. Cap-friendly deal? Yep. Primed for controversy? Also yes. Flyers cloak themselves in mystery, get Mason from Blue Jackets for Leighton

The endless goaltending soap opera just got a spin-off. In their first foray into dealing ahead of the 3 PM trade deadline, the Flyers acquired Steve Mason from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Multiple reports initially stated it is for multiple draft picks, but with the club at the 50-contract limit thanks to picking up Adam Hall off waivers, another body had go to accommodate current CBA rules. That body turned out to be little-used backup Michael Leighton, and the draft pick is a third-rounder in 2015 as the club confirmed this afternoon. Leighton participated in one game, a 5-1 loss …

Waiver wire: Hall arrives, Foster clears

It’s been a day slower than molasses in Vermont in January on trade deadline 2013, but the first move has been made by the Flyers. Adam Hall was claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Hall, a 32-year-old Michigan native, posted four assists in 20 games with the Bolts, after failing to record a point in six appearances with Carolina earlier in the season. A 10-year NHL veteran who played collegiate hockey for Michigan State, Hall has totaled 65 goals and 147 points in 591 NHL games for Nashville, the Rangers, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Tampa and the Hurricanes.
