Phantoms’ good aim sinks Pirates

Cal Heeter posted 40 saves and Adirondack tied its season record for fewest shots on goal, but the Phantoms pulled themselves together to post a 4-2 victory over the Portland Pirates on Sunday afternoon at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The Phantoms (27-33-5) set the tempo of the game when Tye McGinn scored just nine seconds after the opening faceoff. Jeff Dimmen tied the game with his second goal in four games after being scratched in 15 straight, Marcel Noebels had the game winning goal and Eric Wellwood put the game away with a beautiful breakaway with 46 second left …

Flight Plan: Home Cooking

After having five days off, the Philadelphia Flyers will now play five games over the next eight days as they attempt to claw their way back into the playoff picture. As of today, Philadelphia is just three points out of the bottom of the Eastern Conference and five points out of the eighth and final playoff spot. The good news is they’re a healthy bunch, (other than Danny Briere who was injured in practice yesterday, is questionable for the game today and is listed as day-to-day), which is more than can be said for a lot of teams in the …

Harper, Cepis help Titans dominate Nailers for second straight day

It was fan appreciation night at the Sun National Bank Center last night and the Trenton Titans showed their appreciation by putting a 7-2 shellacking on the Wheeling Nailers. Shane Harper recorded his second hat trick in as many days on his way to a five-point game, as Jacob Cepis posted four assists in a six-point performance for the Titans’ second blowout win in a 48-hour span over the Nailers. Blake Kessel also had a big night for the hosts, as he had a trio of assists. “They’re going in for me right now,” Harper said after the win. “I feel …

Titans whip Nailers behind Harper, Cepis

Shane Harper picked up a pair of goals in the game’s first six minutes en route to his first career hat trick, while Jacob Cepis finished with a goal and two assists as the Trenton Titans made short work of the Wheeling Nailers, 5-2, on Friday night. “I’ve played a few strong games while I was here. I wasn’t getting the bounces but today I guess they were going in. Things just went right,” Harper admitted. “I had one job; to play as hard as I could, and put points on the board and get my confidence up. It’s my …

Goaltender in the Making

I went to a Rockford IceHogs game last Saturday (my third this season, which is pretty cool) and during the first intermission (much like at the Philadelphia Flyers’ games) they had kids playing hockey. I noticed that there were a few girls on the ice which made me happy. I don’t know much about women’s hockey, but I would definitely like to learn. The goalie for the side I was on was female. And yes, the kids don’t move too fast along the ice, but there were a couple of bounces on the almost goal in the last seconds and …

“All-Star Break” Just What Flyers Need

The Flyers are just plain bad. I said it weeks ago and still believe it today. There was always the possibility of this happening. No training camp, combined with the loss of veteran leaders like Jaromir Jagr and Matt Carle with no one to replace them, led the Flyers to this situation. There was always a feeling that the Flyers could struggle, but never this drastically. The Flyers, in the midst of a six-day layoff from their frenetic 48-game schedule, sit three games under the .500 mark with a 13-16-1 record. They are 4-6-0 in their last ten games and …

Flyers Hockey: The Organization

Ask anyone who is affiliated with the Philadelphia Flyers, and they will tell you that the organization is good to its players, both current and former. For proof, look no further than the team’s front office. Bobby Clarke, the longtime face of the organization while a player, is the team’s Senior Vice President. Dave Brown and Derian Hatcher both hold player personnel positions, while Craig Berube is an assistant coach. And former players Riley Cote and Terry Murray both now hold coaching positions with the Adirondack Phantoms, the Flyers’ AHL affiliate. Have you missed a Bernie Parent signing? No worries. …

The Dirty Half Dozen: Six choices for the next Flyers head coach

No matter which way you figure, the sands in the hourglass of Peter Laviolette’s tenure as Philadelphia Flyers head coach are rapidly descending towards the bottom. The power vacuum, whether it is created during this six-day block, at the trade deadline or following the completion of this truncated season, will leave a huge question mark as far as discerning which direction the franchise will head going forward. When it occurs, Laviolette will be the latest in a string of those given the reins, who didn’t manage to make it through four seasons at the helm. That’s where our feats of …

Crashing the Crease: Will Smaller Pads Really “Fix” NHL Scoring?

With the league’s 30 General Managers meeting to discuss ways to tweak the NHL product, the issue of goal scoring totals has once again reared its head. Since the resumption of play from the cancelled 2004-05 season, scoring has slipped from 6.05 goals per game to 5.25 goals per game. Whether or not that is really a problem that needs fixing is an argument for another column, but the fixes being discussed are rather relevant to goalies. What is the solution? Well, according to some – including Mike Babcock — the answer is a simple ultimatum: bigger nets, or smaller …
