Special teams lift Phantoms past Senators

The Adirondack Phantoms finished their third game in just as many nights with a win over the Binghamton Senators on Sunday, by a score of 2-1 at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The 3,127 who attended bore witness to the Phantoms (21-27-3) wearing Dax-themed jerseys to celebrate the mascots birthday (My head is still shaking just thinking about it). Special teams were the big highlight for the worn-out Phantoms. After killing the first of what would be two 5-on-3 advantages, the Phantoms went on the power play where Matt Mangene received a pass from Jason Akeson and skated down the right …

RICE & MICE: Matt Read’s rib cage muscles and Zach Redmond’s femoral artery

Injuries giveth and injuries taketh away. Just as it was announced that Scott Hartnell was nearing a return to the Flyers lineup, it was announced that Matt Read would miss around six weeks with torn rib cage muscles. Read left the February 20 game against Pittsburgh after the first period and did not return. Now, when players injure their wrist, we can put a brace on it. Shoulder injury? Put the shoulder in a sling. Ankle? Give them some crutches so they can rest the ankle. Rib muscle injury? Well, we can’t exactly tell a player to stop breathing …

Flight Plan: Home Sweet Home

The Philadelphia Flyers went 3-1-0 this week, capping off a six-game road trip with a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins by a score of 6-5. They lost the back-to-back game with the Florida Panthers, but beat the Winnipeg Jets, 5-3. More importantly, the Flyers are now in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 20 points and play their next three games at home, where their record is 5-2-1. This week the Orange and Black will host James van Riemsdyk and the Toronto Maple Leafs, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, and Daniel Alfredsson and the Ottawa Senators. Get your …

Schultz Scores Four, Titans Roll Over Royals

Stephen Schultz potted four power-play goals and Scott Wedgewood stopped everything he saw, as the Trenton Titans dominated the Reading Royals 6-0 last night at the Sun National Bank Center. Connor Goggin and Jacob Cepis also found nylon in the victory, while the pair of Blake Kessel and Kelly Zajac each had three assists in the easy win. Derrick Pallis, Bryan Haczyk, and Jesse Todd each had an assist in the win as well, as the Titans provided one of their most impressive wins in years. “I don’t know, must have been the ice cream I had for lunch today,” …

Flyers Win 5-3 As Jets Run Out Of Gas

Wayne Simmonds capped a furious comeback for the Flyers scoring at 11:03 remaining in the third period to give the Flyers a 4-3 lead and a 5-3 victory. Simmonds received a cross-ice pass just in front of the goalmouth from Brayden Schenn, and all Simmonds had to was tap in the game-winner. The Flyers, playing their first game since losing a listless game to the Panthers 5-2 on Thursday, have now won three of their last four games. B. Schenn led the Flyers, as he scored two goals and picked up the game-winning assist. Also scoring for the Flyers was …

Medical Miracle: Hartnell Returns

It was just 32 days ago that we feared the worst as Scott Hartnell went limping off the ice in Newark after taking a shot to the left foot from teammate Kimmo Timonen. Now, at the conservative end of his recovery timetable, Hartnell has returned to the lineup, per head coach Peter Laviolette, after a 16-game absence as the Flyers take on the Winnipeg Jets at home this afternoon. Hartnell had undergone surgery to correct the fracture three days after the incident, and had initially been given a 4-to-8 week turnaround. But in typical Flyers fashion, things progressed quicker than …

The top 25 Flyers prospects under 25

Broad Street Hockey asked me to contribute a list of my top 25 Flyers prospects under the age of 25 back in August. They ran a series of posts on the topic that also featured Anthony SanFilippo, Dustin Leed, Frank Seravalli, Bill Meltzer, and the BSH crew. It was an honor to be asked and to be included in such a high profile group. Not being above facing possible ridicule — Oh, hey there, Niko Hovinen — I opted to publish the list here for public consumption. Have at it, everyone. Claude Giroux Sean Couturier Brayden Schenn Jakub Voracek Wayne Simmonds …

Philadelphia – Without the Flyers

President’s Day weekend found me in your city: Philadelphia. My school takes a four day weekend then and I so desperately wanted to see my best friend and come back to where I didn’t have to defend my Philadelphia Flyers love, so I went. I’ve been twice before this trip (as far as I can remember) and both times prior involved hockey. The first was my inaugural NHL game where the Flyers won against the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was thrilling and I remember being unable to eat or even sit for most of the game because I was so …

“It Is What It Is” – The State of the Flyers

“It is what it is.” The comment made by Flyers coach Peter Laviolette after Thursday night’s 5-2 loss to the Florida Panthers says everything I need to know about this Flyers team. But what do we know about the 2013 Philadelphia Flyers? Are they resilient? Coming back from down 2-0 in Pittsburgh, I’d say that, yes, these Flyers are resilient. Are they disciplined? No. The Flyers are leading the NHL in penalties with 120. Will they give games away? After last night’s debacle of a game versus the Florida Panthers, the obvious answer is yes. But this is also a …
