Armchair GM: Five minutes on CapGeek will quell your fears

So, you’re freaking out because the Flyers acquired Mark Streit for a prospect who would never play in the NHL and a 2014 mid-level draft pick. He’s like a million years old and wants like a billion dollars a year. The Flyers have no cap space and OH MY GOD THIS TEAM IS SCREWED! Step back from the ledge. Everything is going to be OK. To prove it, I spent a total of five minuts putting together a roster on CapGeek that included buyouts, improving the defense, and re-signing free agents while still leaving over $3 million in cap space …

Then and Now: Nikolay Zherdev

Many of the biggest names in today’s NHL were selected in the first round of the 2003 draft. After Marc-Andre Fleury, Eric Staal, and Nathan Horton were picked with the first three overall picks, the Columbus Blue Jackets picked Nikolay Zherdev. Last season, Streit tallied six goals and 21 assists in 48 games, adding two goals and five points in a first-round playoff exit against Pittsburgh. For his career, Streit has totaled 65 goals and 223 assists for …

Coaching adjustments: Pay attention to the point

Early on in the season, the Philadelphia Flyers found themselves in some trouble. Their slow start has been well documented at this point, but it is all too easy to forget how close they seemed to come to turning it around before the wheels came off for good. By the 11th of February, they had already completed over 25 percent of their regular season schedule, finding themselves below .500; but they had finally started to find their way into the win column. With seven of a possible eight points over a four-game stretch, the team traveled to Toronto with every …

”Les aventures loufoques de Herpen au Canada”

When I last appeared here, I croaked out almost 3,000 words for my young, budding writers on the often contradictory, shadowy nature of sports media. This time around, there will be nothing of the sort. Have you ever embarked on a road trip, only to be held up at Canadian customs because someone in your party decided to joke that the entire group’s purpose for crossing over was to storm the country to reclaim the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America? Did you wonder why they did it, given there were actually two firearms just kinda …
