Tom Sestito recorded his first career two-goal game with Philadelphia — overshadowing the return of defenseman Matt Carle to Philadelphia — as the Flyers defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning by a 2-1 score in their second meeting in the last nine days. Sestito also managed to double his entire career goal output, while Zac Rinaldo created a sensation of another kind when he scored a knockout in a first-period bout with B.J. Crombeen. Draft Eligibles: Ryan Pulock (WHL)

Although it may be cold outside and the NHL has just begun it’s never too early to take a look at upcoming draft eligible players for the 2013 draft, which will be held up the turnpike in Newark. This week I’m taking a look at defenseman Ryan Pulock of the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings. In 43 games played thus far for Brandon, Pulock has 10 goals, 27 assists good for 37 points. He is also a plus 2 on the season. Pulock did miss two weeks in early January this year with bone chips in his wrist. That injury should …

CBA Explained: Contract variability

This week we are taking a look at contract variability which is essentially the amount that salary can vary from one year to the next within a player’s contract. Previously, only the 100 Percent Rule existed, which essentially states that salary can’t vary by more than 50% of the lesser salary in the first two years of the contract. Future Flyers Report: Stolarz Unbeaten with Knights, Cousins Leads OHL in Scoring

Goaltender Anthony Stolarz had a record of 2-5-0 and a save percentage under .900 with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks before he joined the London Knights of the OHL in early January. Since his move, Stolarz has appeared in six games for the Knights and has yet to lose. The 45th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft is 4-0-0 in the OHL with a goals against average of 1.84 and a save percentage of .937. Flyers weather the storm, beat Hurricanes 5-3

For the first time in three opportunities in this slow start to the 2013 season, the Philadelphia Flyers were able to win the second part of back-to-back games. After a disheartening 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals last night, the Flyers were able to bounce back against the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday night, winning 5-3. Kurtis Foster, Braydon Coburn and Danny Briere all collected their first goals of the season in the first period, and Ilya Bryzgalov proved himself once again, making a season-high 39 saves. Joni Pitkanen, Eric Staal and Patrick Dwyer scored for the Hurricanes, who couldn’t maintain momentum …

The first period of tonight’s game was sloppy, fast paced, and loaded with ups and downs. Here are some noteworthy items: The defensemen are playing terrible defensively but they are also jumping into the play, generating offense and scoring goals. Obviously, there needs to be more balance here but, if the defense can spark the forwards, less pressure will be put on the defense and it will all work out in the long run. Adirondack’s Rob Bordson made up for his bad pass at the blue line – which gave Norfolk a 3-on-0 and an easy goal – by digging his skates in and scoring two of his own, helping to lead the Phantoms past the Norfolk Admirals 5-2 in front of a crowd of 3,157 at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Matt Mangene, Jason Akeson and Shane Harper also lit the lamp for the Phantoms (18-21-3) as the team moved even in the standings with the Admirals (18-22-3) with 39 points. Simmonds Hurt in Flyers’ Third Straight Loss

The Philadelphia Flyers dropped their third straight game on Friday night in Washington against the Capitals by the score of 3-2. Wojtek Wolski had the eventual game-winner for the Caps, while Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist in the victory. Braden Holtby had 31 saves for Washington, as the only two Flyers to beat him on the night were Bruno Gervais and Brayden Schenn.
