Last year, I know I did a post about superstitions, especially relating to sports. I believe there is even a beer commercial now that highlights that. I had never, never been superstitious until I became a hockey fan. Then, there was this thing with wearing a certain Flyers shirt, sitting a certain way, etc. and so on. Sim returns to Phantoms on PTO

A key component to the Phantoms’ last Calder Cup triumph returned to the organization on Thursday. Jon Sim, a journeyman player who has skated at multiple levels both in and out of North America, was signed to a professional tryout contract (PTO) by the Adirondack Phantoms. “I was in touch with (Paul) Holmgren through my agent. Two weeks ago, I laid out my expectations for Ilya Bryzgalov’s season. In short, I expected him to start well thanks to his keeping the engine warmed up over in Russia, but my fear was the Flyers’ lacking defensive corps would take its toll on him and lead a to a mid-season slump. I felt that a .920-or-higher save percentage wasn’t too likely by season’s end. Early on, he’s fighting to prove me wrong, posting a pretty stellar .924 save percentage and a goals-against average of 2.19, especially given the support he’s had thus far. Heeter feels the heat with two-game ban

Better late than never. While most of us were hyperventilating over what a second meeting between the Flyers and New York Rangers would entail, the ECHL gave Trenton goaltender Cal Heeter a two-game suspension for his puck-firing stunt over the weekend. If you recall, Heeter, recently sent down from the Phantoms to the Titans, was so upset with giving up a goal to Wheeling on Saturday night, that he cleared the puck over the glass and into the stands in frustration. The Philadelphia Flyers started the week with a pair of wins, but a pair of lackadaisical efforts led to two losses where they were outscored 7-2. The Orange and Black find themselves at the bottom of the division with a trio of meetings against Southeast Division opponents over the next seven days. On paper it looked like a mismatch. Then No. 3 Boston College, who sit atop Hockey East with a 14-7-2 overall record, versus Maine, who is dead last in the conference with a 7-14-4 overall record. Don’t tell that to the Black Bears who swept the road series against the Eagles. Flyers Fall to Rangers in New York

A slow start and a series of failed special teams’ opportunities in the second period hurt the Philadelphia Flyers tonight in their 2-1 loss to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Ryan Callahan had the eventual game-winning goal, as Henrik Lundqvist had 26 stops in the Flyers’ first loss of the season to the Rangers. Kimmo Timonen had Philly’s lone goal, which came a power play in the third period. The Flyers came out flat and didn’t seem to be there mentally tonight. Future Looks Bright For Scott Laughton

Scott Laughton is not the fastest, nor is he the biggest (6’1, 177 pounds) or the oldest (just 18 years old). He is not the most talented. But, what Scott Laughton did during his five-game trial with the Philadelphia Flyers proved that he could play at the NHL level. During Laughton’s brief stint with the Flyers, he registered zero goals, zero assists, and obviously, zero points. He averaged 11:31 a game, and that time is just not enough to develop a player with his style. I agree with the Flyers’ decision to send Laughton back to Oshawa to play with …
